Miami is facing record heat this week. A cold front is on the way, but will it get here?

Feeling unusually toasty?

Nope, you didn’t wake up back in July. The winter holidays are indeed coming, with Christmas programming all over TV and around South Florida malls.

But it is pushing the mid-80s, and the record high for Miami was 87 degrees at this time in 2017, according to the National Weather Service.

“We are going to be in that ballpark as the day progresses and we are going to be looking out to see if we meet that record for Miami,” said Weather Service meteorologist Ana Torres-Vazquez of the Miami office.

CBS4 meteorologist Lissette Gonzalez is eyeing the possibility for 87 degrees in Kendall, the Redland and Coral Springs, with slightly cooler temperatures in Miami, Opa-locka and Fort Lauderdale, where she sees 84 degrees as a high.

The forecast of temperatures in the 80s with lows around 70 continues through the weekend under mostly sunny skies. The only weather hazard of note: Areas of fog are expected again late Wednesday night and Thursday morning across South Florida’s interior and west coast.

The Florida Keys expects a high of 82 Wednesday and through the weekend and clear skies. No weather warnings have been issued for the island chain, according to the National Weather Service in Key West.

Mostly clear skies and near record heat is on tap for Miami on Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2021. The warm weather is expected to last through the week, according to meteorologists with the National Weather Service in Miami.

Is a cold front on the way?

Relief in the form of a cold front — it is December, after all — is not something you ought to bank too much on, Torres-Vazquez said Wednesday morning as the weather service monitors a few fronts for the end of the week.

“It looks like we may have a front coming through some time over the weekend, Saturday and Sunday, but what some models say is that it won’t reach our area proper and probably will stall out in the northern part of the state. We wouldn’t really see a significant cool-down in Miami,” she said.

That means maybe 72 degrees or so for a low in Miami on Saturday.

Tallahassee, however, is expecting a low of 44 degrees Sunday night as Saturday night’s 50% chance of thunderstorms in the Florida Panhandle usher in some chills. Gainesville could see 48 degrees Sunday night.

The Tampa Bay area, which was also experiencing periods of fog midweek like Miami, could dip to about 58 degrees Sunday.

But the meteorologist also notes it was still too early to tell for sure and the weather service will be “on the lookout” for any changes.

Otherwise, expect clear skies with a 20% chance of rain in South Florida on Sunday.
