Miami Dolphins avoid disaster after ‘butt punt’ vs. Bills. Now they can laugh about it.

Thomas Morstead stood in the back of the end zone with 1:33 left in the fourth quarter, ready to execute his fifth punt of the game — hopefully one to make it tough for the Buffalo Bills to drive for a game-winning touchdown.

He got the snap, released it to kick and made contact with his foot, only instead of it flying down the field it flew into Trent Sherfield’s butt. The punt flipped straight into the air and a few feet backward, out of the back of the end zone. The Bills got a safety and suddenly all they needed was a field goal to win.

The Miami Dolphins, however, survived for a 21-19 win. No harm, no foul.

“I’m sure there’s already a meme out online of what happened,” Morstead said. “Especially for young guys, it’s really difficult sometimes. You start thinking about those things. You don’t want to be the guy that is embarrassed. And, shoot, maybe it was my fault. ... But at the end of the day, none of that matters in the moment. We have to go kickoff, and we only have a two point lead. And we’re punting from the 20 yard line. So we need a big play. And that’s all we talked about. [It] was, “Hey, let’s move on. The next play is now the biggest play.’”

To his credit, Morstead responded by booming the free kick 74 yards to pin the bills back at their own 23-yard line with 1:25 left, needing to pick up at least 30 yards to get into desperation field-goal range.

The ending meant the Dolphins could all feel comfortable joking about it.

“I’ve never seen a butt punt,” star wide receiver Tyreek Hill said, “but next time [Sherfield’s] gonna catch it with his butt cheeks. Because he’s got strong butt cheeks.”

Even former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez, who was part of the NFL’s most famous butt-related moment when he ran into a teammate and fumbled in Thanksgiving in 2012, got in on the action, tweeting to Morstead to “stay out of my lane bro.”

Morstead said he hadn’t seen the tweet after the game and would have to ruminate on a witty response.
