Miami beats out SEC, ACC suitors to add another linebacker to its 2023 recruiting class

The Miami Hurricanes are trying to overhaul several position groups in their Class of 2023 and they took another step toward reshaping their linebackers corps Saturday.

Marcellius Pulliam, a three-star linebacker from Georgia, orally committed to Miami, picking the Hurricanes over several Southeastern Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference suitors.

Pulliam announced his commitment at the Premiere Lofts at Trilith in Fayetteville, Georgia, and live streamed the announcement on Instagram.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound senior is the fifth linebacker to commit to Miami’s 2023 recruiting class, joining four-star linebackers Malik Bryant and Raul Aguirre, and three-star linebackers Bobby Washington and Kaleb Spencer. With the Hurricanes set to lose two of its top four linebackers from last season and depth a concern after years of struggling to recruit the position, coach Mario Cristobal hopes he has reloaded by pairing this haul with underclassman linebackers Corey Flagg Jr. and Wesley Bissainthe.

Miami beat out the Louisville Cardinals, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Mississippi State Bulldogs and Auburn Tigers to land Pulliam. He took an unofficial visit to Coral Gables in June and still has his official visit to use, perhaps later this month before the three-day signing period begins Dec. 21.

Although he barely sits inside the top 800 of the 247Sports composite rankings, Pulliam has been excellent in his limited time as a senior at Sandy Creek in Tyrone, Georgia. In just six games, Pulliam has 43 tackles, five tackles for loss, four sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery at middle linebacker. He also plays some fullback for the Patriots, who advanced to the AAA championship Friday.

Pulliam is the second player to commit to the Hurricanes this week, even after they failed to qualify for a bowl game by ending their season with a blowout loss to the Pittsburgh Panthers last Saturday. Miami flipped four-star athlete Collins Acheampong from the Michigan Wolverines on Tuesday and further bolstered their defense with another commitment this weekend. With those two in the fold, the Hurricanes’ 2023 class is up to No. 8 in the country, jumping one spot past the rival Florida Gators.

Miami might not be done at linebacker, either. The Hurricanes are also hoping to flip Miami Central’s Stanquan Clark from Louisville and linebackers coach Charlie Strong was at Traz Powell Stadium in Miami on Friday to watch the four-star linebacker play and advance to the Class 2M championship.
