Mexico says tourists lost documents in fire on resort island

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Tourists and local people escaped unharmed from a large fire that raged in an area of hotels and guest houses on the island of Holbox, at the tip of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, Mexican officials said Tuesday,

Authorities said some tourists lost their documents to the blaze.

It was not clear how many structures burned in the fire, which broke out late Monday and was brought under control by the Mexican navy, National Guard and other agencies early Tuesday.

Video from the scene showed some firefighters from a neighboring municipality using buckets of water to try to douse the flames.

The governor of Quintana Roo state said nobody was injured in the blaze. But Gov. Mara Lezama pledged to build a fire station on the island, noting it had depended on help from other municipalities to put out the blaze.

She said consular officials were helping tourists with emergency travel documents.
