How I Met Your Father bosses on unaired Barney return

How I Met Your Father bosses Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger have teased details about Barney's return to the spin-off show that didn't air.

Fans will remember that Neil Patrick Harris reprised his role as Barney Stinson from How I Met Your Mother during the season-two premiere of How I Met Your Father. During the brief cameo, Barney was involved in a minor accident when main character Sophie, played by Hilary Duff, crashed into the back of his car.

Speaking of the cameo appearance, Aptaker and Berger revealed that they actually shot more for the scene.

"There was a little bit more that we shot that we took out of the [final] cut," Aptaker said. "But our thinking was that Barney is a little bit more of a family man now… maybe he's living the suburban dad life."

According to Berger, the footage that didn't make it into the episode would have given fans an insight into Barney's new life.

"We could have written this scene to go on for 45 minutes, but there were details about Sunday night dinner and all these things, and all of the routines and rituals that he has now as a family man," Berger explained.

"But yes, like Isaac said, we're nodding to the idea that his life has changed and brought him here," he added.

Aptaker then quipped: "Even the car he's driving! It's still a cool car, but that SUV is a 'dad mobile' if I've ever seen one.

Fans won't have long to wait to find out what Barney's been up to, as Neil Patrick Harris is set to return again for the show's mid-season finale, which airs tonight (March 28) on Hulu.

How I Met Your Father is available on Hulu in the US and on Disney+ in the UK, with new episodes releasing weekly on Wednesdays.
