How I Met Your Father's co-creator has suggested fans should be "eagle-eyed" for further Easter eggs referencing How I Met Your Mother.

Of course, we already know some of the ways in which the two shows are connected – and we've done a handy round-up of nods here – with Father set in the same universe as its predecessor.

However, co-creator Isaac Aptaker has responded to the question of how watchful fans should be going forward, telling TVLine: "I think pretty eagle-eyed. That's something we love from the original.

"It's also something [co-showrunner Elizabeth Berger and I] love doing on This Is Us, where everything is very, very intentional. These shows are so much fun because they are puzzle.

"They take simple moments, very grounded moments, and make them feel huge, all by storytelling and how information is very carefully revealed," he added. "We're a big fan of elements like that, and people should certainly be watching for them."

Speaking more specifically about character Ian (Daniel Augustin), and whether his profession as a marine biologist connects to Naomi (Katie Holmes), Aptaker remained tight-lipped.

"Whether that specifically connects to Katie Holmes, I will not say," he teased. "But yes, that sort of level of randomness and detail [is baked into the show, and] there are connections to be drawn throughout."

Ahead of its debut, Digital Spy said in our review of the new show: "How I Met Your Father does a good job of nodding to its source material without outright copying it, but ultimately it feels like the apartment formerly owned by Marshall and Lily – it's the same thing, but given a quick lick of paint.

"Let's hope the show maintains its upwards trajectory, or it'll be too little too late."

How I Met Your Father airs Tuesday nights on Hulu in the US and Wednesdays on Disney+ in the UK.
