Arsenal have given Mesut Ozil permission to travel to Turkey to undergo a medical and complete his move to Fenerbahce.

Ozil said goodbye to his Arsenal team-mates on Sunday and the final details of his switch to Fenerbahce are expected to be formalised in the coming days.

The £350,000-a-week midfielder still has six months left on his Arsenal contract but he has agreed to waive a chunk of the approximately £7million in wages he is owed.

Ozil will join Fenerbahce on a free transfer after the Turkish giants saw off competition from MLS side DC United.

The 32-year-old German midfielder has been frozen out at Arsenal and has not played for the Gunners since a 1-0 win over West Ham back in March.

Ozil recently spoke of his admiration for Fenerbahce during a Twitter Q&A. “Fenerbahce is like Real Madrid in Spain,” he said. “The biggest club in the country.

“I grew up as a Fenerbahce fan as a kid in Germany. Every German-Turkish person supports a Turkish team when they grow up in Germany. And mine was Fenerbahce.”

A formal announcement on Ozil’s move to Fenerbahce is set to be made once his medical and the relevant paperwork have been completed.
