Mercedes Vision AMG Concept Is a Look at the Company's Performance Future

Mercedes unveiled a new all-electric concept dubbed the Mercedes Vision AMG on Thursday. Meant to show off the company's design plans for its future line of performance cars, it sports an all-new electric platform with an in-house-built motor.

The Vision AMG's design borrows much of its general shape from the company's own EQXX concept released in January, though it leans more in the direction of a pure concept than a near-production-ready car. There are no windows, save for the front windshield, and a funky new fascia that incorporates three LEDs in the shape of the Mercedes tri-tip star as the headlights. One bit of familiarity are the vertical grille slats currently seen on today's AMG products. The silver and green color scheme, as well as the racy wheels, are tributes to the company's Formula 1 success.

This concept also serves as the debut for Mercedes's AMG.EA platform, an all-electric vehicle architecture that will underpin the company's all-electric performance models going forward. Underneath you'll find an in-house-designed battery pack and an Axial Flux Motor developed by YASA, a wholly owned subsidiary of Mercedes.

While Mercedes hasn't said whether a version of the Vision AMG will go into production, it's likely to remain as a concept. Think of it more as a design study to show off where the company plans to take its design scheme in the decade to come. Of course, we wouldn't be mad if it does end up getting the green light, because it's very pretty.
