Trump stirs tariff pot with fresh threats on EU, Feb 1 China deadline
U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday vowed to hit the European Union with tariffs and said his administration was discussing a 10% punitive duty on Chinese imports because fentanyl is being sent from China to the U.S. via Mexico and Canada. Trump voiced his latest tariff threats in remarks to reporters at the White House a day after taking office without immediately imposing tariffs as he had promised during his campaign. Financial markets and trade groups exhaled briefly on Tuesday, but his latest comments underscored Trump's longstanding desire for broader duties and a new Feb. 1 deadline for 25% tariffs against Canada and Mexico, as well as duties on China and the EU.

Rare snowstorm blankets Houston and New Orleans in white
HOUSTON (Reuters) -A rare winter storm churned across the U.S. Gulf Coast on Tuesday, breaking snowfall records more than a century old in a southern region where flurries are unusual, as much of the United States remained in a dangerous deep freeze. A snowstorm warning was in effect for 31 million people - from southern Texas east through Georgia and north to the Carolinas and into Virginia - until Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service said. With the storm moving east, crews near Houston plowed highways on Tuesday while downtown streets, covered in white, were virtually deserted.

Indonesia fines Google $12 million for unfair business practices
JAKARTA (Reuters) -Indonesia's antitrust agency on Tuesday ordered Google to pay fines about 202 billion rupiah ($12.37 million) for unfair business practices related to its payment system services for Google Play Store, its software distribution platform. The agency launched an investigation into Alphabet Inc's Google in 2022 on suspicion it had abused its dominant position by requiring Indonesian app developers to use Google Play Billing, at higher rates than other payment systems, or face removal from the Google Play Store. The panel said in a hearing that the systems reduced developers' earnings as they led to the reduction of users, adding Google has been found breaking Indonesia’s law against monopoly.
