Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on Saturday drew a direct link between immigration and an attack in Germany where a man drove into a Christmas market teeming with holiday shoppers, killing at least five people and injuring 200 others. During a rare appearance before independent media in Budapest, Orbán expressed his sympathy to the families of the victims of of what he called the “terrorist act” on Friday night in the city of Magdeburg.

A 9-year-old was among five people killed when a Saudi doctor drove into a Christmas market teeming with holiday shoppers in the German city of Magdeburg, an official said Saturday, as people mourned the victims and their shaken sense of security. Prosecutor Horst Nopens said the suspect, a 50-year-old Saudi doctor, is under investigation on suspicion of murder, attempted murder and bodily harm. “There is no more peaceful and cheerful place than a Christmas market,” Chancellor Olaf Scholz said.

The suspect in the attack on the Christmas market in Magdeburg appeared to be dissatisfied with the treatment of Saudi refugees in Germany, a prosecutor has said. The suspect - who was arrested at the scene - was a 50-year-old Saudi citizen who worked as a doctor and arrived in Germany in 2006, premier of Saxony-Anhalt state Reiner Haseloff said. Prosecutor Horst Walter Nopens said the motive behind the attack appeared to be "dissatisfaction with the treatment of refugees from Saudi Arabia and how they are being treated in Germany".
