Mel Gibson Is Working On A Passion Of The Christ Sequel

Mel Gibson is working on a sequel to his 2004 biblical blockbuster ‘The Passion of The Christ’, according to reports.

Randall Wallace, the screenwriter who penned Oscar-winner 'Braveheart’ for Gibson, confirmed rumours that he’s currently writing the script.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, he added that 'the project is becoming too difficult to keep under wraps’.

Wallace said that he and Gibson began talking about a sequel while making the movie 'Hacksaw Ridge’ together, which is due out next year.

And as you might expect from the events of the first movie, culminating in the crucifixion of Christ, the sequel will pick up the story of the resurrection.

“I always wanted to tell this story,” he said. “The Passion is the beginning and there’s a lot more story to tell.”

Despite its eye-poppingly brutal violence and the fact that the story was told in ancient Aramaic language with subtitles, the original movie was an unexpected smash-hit on its release, with Jim Caviezel playing the role of Christ and Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalene.

It made $612 million (more like $775 million today, or £536 million) on its extremely modest $30 million budget, though it split critics and was accused of anti-semitism.

Wallace, who pens other faith-based dramas, added: “The evangelical community considers The Passion the biggest movie ever out of Hollywood, and they kept telling us that they think a sequel will be even bigger.”

As for how much the budget could be on the movie, he alluded to investors being interested, but said 'It’s too early to talk money. This is such a huge and sacred subject’.
