A new biography about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s time in the royal family is about to hit shelves, and it’s truly going in. Not only does the book touch on the “royal feud” between Prince William and Prince Harry, but it also dives into Meghan’s relationship with her sister-in-law Kate Middleton.

In a new excerpt from the upcoming book, which was published in the Sunday Times (via People and Vanity Fair), royal reporters Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand say Kate didn’t do much to welcome Meghan or make things less tense between their families.

“Though it was not necessarily her responsibility, Kate did little to bridge the divide,” they write, adding that the duchesses “were not at war with each other” despite headlines claiming otherwise—although there were some “awkward moments.”

Apparently, Kate and Meghan “struggled to move past distant politeness” and had little in common “other than the fact that they lived at Kensington Palace.” Oh, and speaking of “awkward moments,” at one point, Meghan and Kate both found themselves heading out of Kensington Palace to go shopping on the same street, and Kate straight-up left Meghan to shop alone—instead going a different direction in her Range Rover.

All that said, neither duchess was thrilled by the media speculation about their relationship, and according to Vanity Fair (note: this claim isn’t included in Finding Freedom), Kate tried to make things better by taking flowers to Meghan as a peace offering, and Meghan “told Kate in no uncertain terms that flowers were not enough.”

Yikes.
