Why Meghan Markle's new title is so special

Early Saturday morning, Kensington Palace announced that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s official titles will be the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Markle will be the first ever to hold her title, while Harry will be the second, taking over from the former and very progressive first Duke of Sussex.

The first Duke of Sussex, Prince Augustus Frederick (1773–1843), was not a popular man in court due to what was considered to be his liberal views on social issues: he supported the abolition of the slave trade.

Given that this was the early 1800s, the first Duke of Sussex was very much ahead of his time. He also campaigned for the removal of civil restrictions on Jews and parliamentary reform.

Seeing as how the new Duchess of Sussex is a mixed race woman, the history behind the title could not be more fitting, and people on social media are absolutely loving it.
