Meghan Markle Reportedly Got in Trouble With the Palace for Wearing This Necklace

This weekend, many revelations came to light about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s decision to step down from the senior royal family…and they just keep coming.

According to Finding Freedom, a biography on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex by royals experts Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand, Markle was reportedly scolded by palace aides for wearing her now famous H and M initial charm necklace.

After wearing the ode to Prince Harry in December 2016, before the pair were publicly together, Finding Freedom reports that Markle was told by Kensington Palace that “wearing such a necklace only served to encourage the photographers to keep pursuing such images—and new headlines,” according to People.

Markle reportedly did not defend herself during the call with the senior aide but “felt frustrated and emotional” afterward. The excerpt claims that “while she knew the aide had good intentions, the surreal experience of having someone from her boyfriend’s office tell her what kind of jewelry to wear or not to smile at a photographer was too much.”

According to the book, Markle was “distraught” when she called a friend about the incident.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Markle and Prince Harry asserts that the pair “were not interviewed and did not contribute to Finding Freedom. This book is based on the authors’ own experiences as members of the royal press corps and their own independent reporting.”

However, if the story is true, Markle seemed to be able to brush off the unwanted advice. In 2019 the duchess wore another necklace with her and her husband’s initials engraved to the U.S. Open. That’s what we like to call a power move.
