After officially leaving their senior working royal roles in March 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have launched their new non-profit organisation.

Sharing the name of their new venture in April last year, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced it would be called 'Archewell' - in honour of their son.

The couple also confirmed that both their new organisation and the name of their son Archie - whose full name is Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor - was inspired by the Greek word Arche which means 'source of action'.

'Archewell is a name that combines an ancient word for strength and action and another that evokes the deep resources we each must draw upon,' they said.

Here's everything you need to know about Archewell:

What is Archewell?

According to the Telegraph, Archewell is an umbrella organisation which plans to include emotional support groups, a multi-media educational network, a wellbeing website and their own charity and volunteer outreach programme.

The couple said in a statement they want 'to do something of meaning, to do something that matters'.

No official launch date was initially given for the organisation while the couple focussed on efforts to support people during the current, unprecedented coronavirus pandemic. At the time of announcing the organisation, the pair said they would launch Archewell 'when the time is right'.

'Faced with this information coming to light, we felt compelled to share the story of how this came to be,' they told the newspaper.

The couple later launched the Archewell website in October 2020. The website's landing page featured the organisation's name broken down phonetically. Visitors were also given the option to subscribe to emails from the organisation and learn more about its plans in the months to come.

It was previously thought the couple would launch a 'SussexRoyal' foundation, however they were reportedly prohibited from using the term 'royal' going forward, due to them relinquishing their royal roles.

Ahead of the couple's televised interview with Oprah Winfrey, the pair updated their organisation's website with a new logo and message that reads: 'Welcome to Archewell. Through our non-profit work, as well as creative activations, we drive systemic cultural change across all communities, one act of compassion at a time.'

The chic logo features a grey 'A' on top of a 'W' and is circled by the words 'community, service, action, compassion' in gold colour.

What work with Archewell oversee?

On Sunday December 20, Archewell reportedly announced that the food relief charity World Central Kitchen will be its first partnership.

The World Central Kitchen has distributed around 50 million meals across 17 countries since it was founded by celebrity chef and restauranteur José Andrés during Haiti’s devastating earthquake in 2010. In 2018, Andrés was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.

The partnership with the charity will provide funding to construct four special Community Relief Centres around the world, with the first to be built on the Caribbean island of Dominica, and to open next year, reports The Telegraph. Another will be in Puerto Rico.

'The health of our communities depends on our ability to connect to our shared humanity,' the couple stated, per the publication.

They reportedly added:

'When we think about Chef Andrés and his incredible team at World Central Kitchen, we're reminded that even during a year of unimaginable hardship, there are so many amazing people willing—and working tirelessly—to support each other. World Central Kitchen inspires us through compassion in action.'

In response to the partnership, Andrés noted: We believe in the healing power of food, and we like to say wherever there's a fight so hungry people may eat, we will be there. We are more energised than ever to continue this vital work, and we're proud that it will be hand in hand with Archewell Foundation and The Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

'I have come to know both of them well, and believe that their values are directly aligned with what we stand for at World Central Kitchen.'

In recent months, Meghan and Harry been seen volunteering at organisations across California, including delivering food across the community through the Project Angel Food organisation.
