Meghan Markle made a rare appearance on Ellen DeGeneres earlier this month, and she didn't exactly hold back.

From discussing her secret date with Prince Harry before they went public with their romance, to the family's Thanksgiving plans and Halloween memories, the Duchess of Sussex gave royal fans a sneak peek inside her life in California with her brood.

Here's everything we learned from Meghan Markle's interview with the TV host.

Secret date

The royal revealed she and Prince Harry went on a secret double date with Princess Eugenie and James Brooksbank before they went public with their romance in 2017.

During a recent interview with Ellen DeGeneres the Duchess of Sussex opened up about the early days of her courtship with her husband, to whom she's been married for three years.

'Yes, [we had to really keep our relationship quiet when we were dating],' she said.

'We did [go to a Halloween party together]. He came to see me in Toronto, and our friends and his cousin Eugenie and now her husband, Jack, they came as well, and the four of us snuck out in Halloween costumes to just have one fun night on the town before it was out in the world that we were a couple.

'No, [the people at the party didn’t know it was us]. It was a post-apocalyptic theme so we had all of this very bizarre costuming on, and we were able to just sort of have one final fun night out.'

Five years later and the royal said this year her children Archie, two, and Lilibet, five months weren't into Halloween 'at all', adding that 'Archie was a dinosaur for maybe five minutes, not even five minutes' and Lili was dressed as a skunk 'like Flower from Bambi'. From the sounds of the conversation DeGeneres was also in attendance at the Halloween shindig.

Early acting days

In the interview the Duchess of Sussex discussed her previous on-screen career, recalling early auditions at Warner Bros, camaraderie with the production company's security guards and more.

Markle, 40, even revealed the car she used to have – not the chauffeur-driven SUVs she’s now used to, but an old Ford Explorer Sport which she described as having ‘a life of its own’.

She told the TV host, who also happens to be her neighbour, that she used to have a unique way of getting into the vehicle, because the side door wouldn’t work.

‘I would park in the back of the parking lot and open the trunk, then climb in and pull it shut behind me and crawl over all my seats to get out,’ she explained.

And if anyone came close to her while she tried to get into the car? The former actor said she would ‘play it off’ by pretending to look for things in the boot.

Lilibet and Archie

During her appearance on the show the royal gave us an insight into her son's life, revealing he loves to help in the family's garden.

Markle showed the tot's likeness to Prince Harry with a photo in which the two-year-old is seen collecting eggs from the chicken coop named Archie's Chick Inn.

While we can't see Archie's face, he looks utterly adorable dressed in a blue jumper, jeans and yellow Hunter x Peppa Pig wellington boots.

We almost missed the photo, but fortunately the family's fans caught it and couldn't help but share the love for the toddler on Twitter.

'Meghan Markle showing Archie with his chickens on Ellen is PRECIOUS, [sic]' one user tweeted.

Another added: 'OOOMMMGGGGGGGG ARCHIE.He’s so grown. Lil Bubba not so little no more [sic].'

According to HELLO! during the interview DeGeneres revealed that Markle's baby daughter Lilibet is teething.

Markle then reportedly joked that she is looking for ideas to help relieve the pain, to which DeGeneres replied: 'Tequila, anything.'

'That's Auntie Ellen for you,' Markle responded, before DeGeneres joked: 'That's why I don't have kids.'

DeGeneres teased the upcoming interview with Markle in a tweet posted on Wednesday, writing: 'A lot has changed since the last time Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex, was on the Warner Brothers lot. Don’t miss the rest of our interview tomorrow.'

As well as living near the Montecito, California home that Markle shares with husband Prince Harry and their children Archie, two, and Lilibet, five months, the talk show host enjoys a friendship with the actor that has spanned the years.

DeGeneres even once revealed that she cradled and fed Archie when he was a young baby, during a summer trip to the UK.

Interviews and baby visits aside, the TV host also came to the couple’s defence when they received criticism for taking private jets for their trips across Europe.

DeGeneres tweeted at the time: ‘Imagine being attacked for everything you do, when all you're trying to do is make the world better.’

The TV star also wrote: ‘They are amazing. They are the cutest couple and so down-to-earth.

‘I see them get attacked and it's not fair. They are just two of the most down-to-earth compassionate people, they're doing so much good for the world.’
