Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are hoping to expand the bounds of their new charitable entity, Archewell.
ICYMI: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex revealed yesterday that they’re soon launching their new nonprofit Archewell and from the sounds of it, it’s going to be major. The 38-year-old duchess and 35-year-old duke filed a trademark application with the U.S. Patent Trademark Office on March 3 asking for exclusive rights to the term Archewell. This, of course, makes sense, but what was surprising about the application was that it also included their intention to reserve rights across “tops, bottoms, shirts, skirts, dresses, pants, jeans, shorts, sweaters, jackets, socks, loungewear, rainwear, footwear [and] headwear.”
So, does that mean the couple intends to do something similar to Markle’s Smart Works capsule collection and design a line with proceeds that go directly to a cause they champion? Markle is, after all, the leading fashion influencer on earth. (According to Lyst, her outfits regularly spark a 216% increase in searches for similar items and sell out almost immediately.) Still, that doesn’t necessarily mean she and Prince Harry will be jumping into the fashion business. While that could be the case, they also could just be ensuring no one else can utilize the name and profit off of the brand they’re hard at work on.
In addition to the clothing aspect of their trademark application, the couple also bundled charitable services, emotional support groups, educational materials and a well-being site into their new mission. Paper stationery, journals, notebooks, pens, pencils and binders are also included in that list, which reminds us of the days when Markle moonlighted as a professional calligrapher.
Another surprising facet of the application? They’ve also asked for a trademark in the realm of podcasts, television shows, digital entertainment content, motion picture films, scripted and unscripted shows and animated television shows. A nod to Markle’s pre-royal life, perhaps?
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex say they plan to launch Archewell when the time is right. We’re just curious to see what it’s all about.
