Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird make history on ESPN's Body Issue — but they're not the only LGBTQ icons to do so

Athletes Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird are sports starts in their own light: Rapinoe is an Olympic medal-winning soccer player and Bird is a WNBA Seattle Storm’s point guard. Together, however, they are making history as the first same-sex couple to grace the cover of ESPN magazine’s Body Issue.

“It’s important for people to come out. Visibility is important,” Rapinoe, 32, told ESPN. “It’s important for there to be a first one on the cover… Just in terms of the culture and society, someone has to do it.”

Bird, 37, told the magazine that she hopes in the future, a gay couple featured in a magazine won’t be news and, instead, will be just the norm, as every other couple would be.

“You want it to not be an issue. You want it to just be, ‘Oh, another couple is on there.’ You know, I think for us to be on it is the first step in that direction,” she said.

The couple has been dating since 2016 and is already making history as one of the ten covers marking the Body Issue’s 10th anniversary.
