Meet the KC Star/810 Varsity Team of the Week: Washington Wildcats High School football
It’s been a while since the Washington High football team started a season 3-0.
How long? The last time was in 2005, when “Batman Begins” played in theaters, Geroge W. Bush presided in the Oval Office and Kanye West’s “Gold Digger” topped the charts.
But the Wildcats are enjoying their best start in years, already matching last year’s win total after a 37-28 victory over Bonner Springs. Senior Xavyer Powell helped lead the way last week with 103 receiving yards and 92 rushing yards — with touchdowns via the air and on the ground.
Senior quarterback Ja’Quarey Williams has thrown for 439 yards and four touchdowns. Defensively, senior Gary Leaper leads the Wildcats with 24 tackles — including five for loss — while fellow senior Antione Williams registered 12 tackles during Friday’s win.
The Wildcats opened the season with a 39-20 victory against Sumner Academy, then handled Harmon 61-0.
This week, Washington hits the road to face Wamego on Friday.
