Medusa Festival: One dead and dozens injured after staging collapses

One person has been killed and dozens injured after high winds caused parts of a stage to collapse at a music festival in Spain, emergency services said.

Due to what was called, “extraordinary” weather conditions, parts of the staging at the Medusa festival was destroyed in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Of those injured, three suffered serious trauma injuires while a further 14 had minor injuries, emergency serviced reported.

“We are completely devastated and saddened at what happened this morning,” the organisers said in a statement on the festival’s Facebook page.

“At around four in the morning unexpected and violent strong winds destroyed certain areas of the festival, forcing management to make the immediate decision to vacate the concert area to guarantee the safety of attendees, workers and artists.”

The six-day festival, which is held in the town of Cullera, south of Valencia and has been suspended until further notice.

“We are in a state of shock because we were 30 metres away [from the stage]. It could have been me, it could have been anyone,” Jesus Carretero, who attended the festival with his brother, told TVE.
