Mean Girls actor Jonathan Bennett announced on Monday that he’s engaged to his TV host boyfriend Jaymes Vaughan.

Presenter Vaughan planned the surprise proposal under the guise of a photoshoot for the pair’s holiday greeting cards.

It became apparent to Bennett that Vaughan was about to pop the question when he took a knee, “When I saw Jaymes take a knee I was so excited I just started hysterically screaming because I didn’t know how to express myself properly,” he told People magazine.

“There was a moment when you feel like, ‘Oh, this is forever, I understand it.’ I screamed ‘Yes’ immediately. Actually it was, ‘Yes! Of course!’”

The Mean Girls actor said he began to “ugly-cry” after Vaughan asked Bennett to marry him and played a song he had written about their relationship.

The romantic moment was caught on video, with Vaughan holding up a sign saying “we never did find our song” and then turning it over to reveal “so I wrote one for you”. In the footage, Bennett is seen trying to hold back tears as he walks over to Vaughan while the song plays.

“There’s not a single thing in my life that I’ve been 100 per cent sure of until you came along … So I want to spend forever, every single day telling you how much I love you.”

Vaughan proposes on one knee, to which Bennett replies “yes, of course” and some party confetti is set off in the background.

The pair are wearing subtle matching rings with small diamonds, designed by Kay Jewelers, to mark the engagement. The rings will also double as wedding bands.

A date for the wedding has not yet been decided, Bennett mused that the wedding would probably be “something between when Elphaba flies in the musical ‘Wicked’ and the finale number of The Greatest Showman.”

Bennett stars in recently released The Christmas House, Hallmark's first LGBTQ Christmas movie about a same-sex couple trying to adopt a baby. "It feels like I'm a part of progress,” Bennett has previously said of his new film.
