May 29 baseball playoff update: Columbia, Gibault headed for state tournament

The IHSA baseball postseason is currently taking place.

Here are the latest postseason games involving metro-east teams, including from action over the weekend.

Class 1A

Springfield (Lincoln Land Community College) Super-Sectional

Gibault Catholic secured a spot at the state tournament following a 7-3 win against Jacksonville Routt in super-sectional action Monday, May 29.

The Hawks improved to 22-14, while Jacksonville Routt finished at 30-6.

Gibault now advances to the state tournament at Dozer Park in Peoria and will face Goreville (22-12) at 10 a.m. Friday, June 2. The third place game then takes place at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 3, with the championship game set for 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 3.

Class 2A

Carbondale (SIU) Super-Sectional

Columbia punched its ticket to state with a 4-1 win against Nashville on Monday, May 29, in the super-sectional round.

The Eagles improved to 33-4, while the Hornets finished at 30-7.

Columbia now advances to the state tournament at Dozer Park in Peoria will face Chicago DePaul (24-14) at 3 p.m. Friday, June 2.

The third place game then takes place at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 3, with the championship tilt set for 5:30 p.m. Saturday, June 3.

Class 3A

Jerseyville Regional

Saturday, May 27

Triad slipped past Mississippi Valley Conference rival Highland 1-0 on Saturday, May 27, to secure the regional crown.

The Knights improved to 26-11, while the Bulldogs finished at 21-16.

Triad now will advances to the Centralia Sectional and will face Effingham (19-15) at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 31,

This marked the teams’ third match-up this spring, with Highland winning 3-2 on May 1 at home and then losing to the Knights 1-0 at Triad on May 3.

Mascoutah Regional

Mascoutah eased past fellow Mississippi Valley Conference foe Waterloo 5-1 on Saturday, May 27, to secure the regional championship.

The Indians improved to 29-6-1, while the Bulldogs finished at 23-12.

Mascoutah now advances to the Centralia Sectional and will face Mt. Vernon (22-14) at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 31.

This marked the Indians’ third win against Waterloo this spring, having posted 9-0 and 9-3 victories in conference action.

Class 4A

Belleville East Regional

O’Fallon outlasted Belleville West 2-1 in 8 innings Saturday, May 27, to capture the regional crown.

The Panthers improved to 25-7 and now will face fellow Southwestern Conference foe Edwardsville at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 31, in the Bloomington Sectional. The game will be played at Alton High School. The Maroons, meanwhile, finished 15-17.

This marked O’Fallon’s third win against West this season, having posted 8-2 and 11-1 victories in Southwestern Conference action.

Edwardsville Regional

Edwardsville slipped past Collinsville 5-4 on Saturday, May 27, to earn the regional championship.

The Tigers improved to 28-9, while the Kahoks finished at 16-15.

Edwardsville now advances to the Bloomington Sectional and will face either O’Fallon or Belleville West at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 31. The game will take place at Alton High School.

This marked Edwardsville’s third win against Collinsville this spring, having previously posted 9-3 and 12-0 verdicts.
