Matt Smith's eerie folk horror Starve Acre is one step closer to getting a release date.

After having its world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival, the 1970s-set film – also starring The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power's Morfydd Clark – has finalised deals to be distributed in regions including the UK, Ireland and North America (via Variety).

Cornerstone also closed a deal with BFI Distribution for the UK and Ireland, while Brainstorm Media has acquired distribution rights for North America.

"A magnificent tribute to the British folk horror tradition which has always been in BFI Distribution's DNA, Starve Acre is also a wonderfully original film," BFI Distribution acquisitions manager Laura Dos Santos commented on getting rights to the film.

"It will enthral a wide range of tastes in the UK and in Ireland — genre fans, cinephiles and beyond."

"We are very excited to bring this stellar addition to the folk horror canon to American audiences. Starve Acre is masterfully made and unsettling in all the best ways," Brainstorm Media CEO Michelle Shwarzstein added.

The movie has also secured distribution in a number of other countries and territories, and will also be screened on airlines thanks to a deal inked with Terry Steiner International.

The film from writer-director Robert Kokotajlo follows couple Juliette and Richard, living on his family's farm – the titular Starve Acre – in rural Yorkshire, northern England.

Their idyllic, if a little foggy, life takes a turn when their son Owen starts exhibiting weird tendencies, with Richard looking back at his dad's research into the local myths to realise there might be more to Starve Acre than meets the eye.

Following its LFF debut, Starve Acre has received rave reviews, and it currently still holds a critic score of 100% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
