Good old Matt Damon – not only does he enjoy the singular charms of the British country pub, he’s also generous with his tips.

Punters at the Chequers Inn at Redbourn in Hertfordshire were shocked to see the Hollywood star pitch up for some drinks on Saturday evening.

According to reports, he spent three hours there, downing four pints of Guinness and happily chatted to locals.

Dressed down in a beanie and a hoodie, he also posed for photos with some of the regulars, including a chap called ‘Raymundo’ from the Redbourne Cricket Club.

But before leaving for nearby Luton airport, where he was getting a private jet back to the US, he dropped each of the bar staff a $100 (£70) tip.

Beverley Whayman and her son Chris were in the pub at the time, and managed to get a snap with Matt.

Beverley told local radio station BOB FM: “It was a once in a lifetime moment. He was an absolute gentleman!”

Speaking to the Herts Advertiser, pub manager Bob Morton added: “All the guests just loved him. He was really, really good with everyone. He just wanted a quiet beer and not a busy boozer. That was fine until somebody recognised him!

“He was a really nice guy. Lots of people came up for photos and he didn’t mind one bit. He was an absolute gent.”

It’s not known why the 45-year-old actor was in the UK – his latest movie, the Alexander Payne-helmed 'Downsizing’ is currently filming in Omaha, Nebraska.

But you can see him next up in ‘Jason Bourne’, due out on August 13.
