Matt Damon was going to take an acting break before Oppenheimer

Matt Damon has revealed that he planned to take an acting break before being cast in Oppenheimer.

The actor plays the role of Manhattan Project director Leslie Groves in the new Christopher Nolan movie, which follows the creation of the first atomic weapons.

Damon – who previously worked with Nolan around a decade ago on Interstellar – explained that he told his wife before landing Oppenheimer that he would take some time off… though there was a "caveat" with Nolan.

"This is going to sound made up, but it's actually true," he recalled to EW's Around the Table.

"I had – not to get too personal – negotiated extensively with my wife that I was taking time off. I had been in Interstellar, and then Chris put me on ice for a couple of movies, so I wasn't in the rotation, but I actually negotiated in couples therapy – this is a true story – the one caveat to my taking time off was if Chris Nolan called."

"This is without knowing whether or not he was working on anything, because he never tells you. He just calls you out of the blue. And so, it was a moment in my household," Damon added.

Fellow star Robert Downey Jr (Lewis Strauss) then joked that "even modern psychology has a caveat".

Oppenheimer sees Cillian Murphy take on the role of theoretical physicist J Robert Oppenheimer, widely regarded as the "father of the atomic bomb".

Speaking to Digital Spy ahead of the movie's release later this week, Murphy admitted he had no hesitation in taking the part, saying: "I've said yes to him from the beginning and will continue to say yes. Any actor would want to work with Chris, no matter what the part.

"But I didn't know it was going to be this huge, ginormous, terrifying part. When it's Chris, he's a genius, and I don't throw that word around, but I think it definitely qualifies."

Oppenheimer is released in cinemas on July 21.
