Mason Mount lit up Saturday’s lunchtime London derby between Chelsea and West Ham with a fantastic goal shortly before half-time.

The England midfielder guided a tremendous side-footed volley beyond the despairing Lukasz Fabianski and into the bottom corner after Tomas Soucek had been caught out by Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Hakim Ziyech floated a perfect pass into the penalty area.

Mount had been left free after West Ham full-back Ben Johnson - who tried to track his run - suffered an injury and was subsequently replaced by Arthur Masuaku.

The brilliant goal restored Chelsea’s narrow advantage at the London Stadium and ensured that they went in at the interval 2-1 ahead.

The Blues had initially led through Thiago Silva’s header from a corner, only for Manuel Lanzini to level the score from the penalty spot after goalkeeper Edouard Mendy took down Jarrod Bowen inside the box following a woeful backpass from Jorginho.

Mount’s goal was his fifth of the season in 23 appearances across all competitions.

He had not scored at all for club or country in 2021/22 before hitting a hat-trick in the 7-0 demolition of struggling Norwich in October, while he also netted the first goal in Wednesday’s 2-1 victory at Watford at Vicarage Road.
