Maryland medical examiner has backlog of autopsies to perform

There's a significant backlog in the work performed by the state's medical examiner, the 11 News I-Team has learned. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner investigates thousands of deaths each year, and sources described long delays in performing autopsies. Funeral directors told the I-Team the delays have grown worse within the past six weeks due to a combination of increased cases and a shortage of staff. OCME is responsible for determining a cause of death in unexplained and suspicious circumstances and those that are not attended by a doctor.
