The Marvelous Mrs Maisel spoilers follow.

As a stand-up comedian, Midge Maisel has not been having an easy time of it, but she's getting there, and now we know The Marvelous Mrs Maisel will be ending with the upcoming season five.

While that's pretty sad news for all involved, they did at least soften the blow by telling us just as season four started to drop, so we had something to keep us busy.

But now it's a waiting game to see how this funny girl's life finally plays out.

Midge has been keeping the world hooked from New York to New Zealand with her efforts to make it in comedy, despite the misogynistic and complicated world of the '60s.

But what lies ahead as she's prepares to to take her final bow?

Here's everything we know about the upcoming season five.

The official release date for The Marvelous Mrs Maisel season five has been announced by Amazon Prime. We'll be watching new episodes on April 14. Three episodes, to be exact: after which the show will go weekly.

And we've already seen glimpses of the filming. Leading lady Rachel Brosnahan was seen with Gideon Glick in her finest Maisel fashions as they filmed on the streets of New York. Let's hope their coats were warm, because it looked like there was an icy chill in the air.

On March 11 of that year, as the final two episodes of season four dropped, Rachel shared behind-the-scenes pics on Instagram thanking fans for their commitment to the show – and a tease of how the final season was taking shape.

"Thank you all for coming on the ride with us this season. It was a season born out of a difficult and uncertain time for our world and to get to come to work and make art stuff with these people we love was the stuff mushy greeting cards are made of," she wrote.

"We're hard at work on the next season and hearing about the things you loved has been wind in our sails."

In November 2022, Rachel confirmed the series had wrapped and said goodbye to Midge in a particularly sweet and moving Instagram post, as she turned the stage lights off one final time.

"That's a series wrap on The Marvelous Mrs Maisel," she wrote. "This thing was lightning in a bottle.

"A cast, a crew and creators who got to time travel for five years together. It changed my life. I'm eternally grateful. I'll have more words later, but for now… Thank you and goodnight."

Alex Borstein also said goodbye with a particularly fitting hilarious pic of her sitting in character on a toilet, accompanied a sentimental message as she closed the book on her time on the show.

"The End. Maisel is no more," she wrote. "I told myself that I wouldn't get too close, that I wouldn't fall in love.

"Yet here I am, heart fractured, with tiny chips now missing here and there. [sigh]

"But if and when she should mend, perhaps it will be those empty in-betweens that will remind me of what's missing. Of what once was.

"The Marvelous Mrs Maisel once was. And it was marvelous, indeed."

Announcing the end of the entire series, Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke (via TVLine) said: "Amy [Sherman-Palladino], Dan [Palladino] and The Marvelous Mrs Maisel have blazed an unparalleled path, elevating the stories we tell about women, challenging the norms in our industry, and forever altering the entertainment landscape with their one-of-a-kind storytelling.

"The dozens of awards cement Maisel's legacy in many ways, but what's even more enduring and poignant are the characters Amy created and the joyous, brilliant, singular world she and Dan brought to life.

"This series has meant so much to Prime Video and the effects of its success will be felt long after its final season. I can't wait for fans and our worldwide Prime Video audience to savour each moment as we embark on the culmination of this groundbreaking and unforgettable series."

Brosnahan feels the time has come for Mrs Maisel to leave the stage (via Hollywood Reporter) – but she's not ready to hear the applause.

"I think it’s the right time, truthfully, because [showrunners] Amy [Sherman-Palladino] and Dan [Palladino] feel like it’s the right time," she said.

"They have crafted these characters and these arcs, and I trust them implicitly if they feel like they have found the endpoint for all of them. But, on a personal level, it feels like we could keep going for quite a long time. The writing is fantastic. This group is unparalleled, and so it’ll be sad to see it go. But, at the same time, better to go out on a high than to drag these storylines on just to stay on the air."

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel season 5 cast: Who's going to be in the final season?

Mrs Maisel just wouldn't quite sit right without the leading lady herself, Rachel Brosnahan.

And Maisel couldn't function at all without her tough-as-nails manager/bestie Susie, played by Alex Borstein, alongside her.

Marin Hinkle and Tony Shalhoub will also return as Midge's parents Rose and Abe, and Michael Zegen will also be predicted to reprise his role as Midge's on/off/on again husband, Joel.

Caroline Aaron and Kevin Pollak may likely make an appearance as Joel's overbearing parents, Shirley and Moishe.

Depending on how season four plays out, other guest stars who pay or may not return include Jane Lynch (as Sophie Lennon) and Luke Kirby (as Lenny Bruce).

Thanks to filming on the streets of New York, it's also been confirmed certain newcomers to season four will also play a role. Notably, This Is Us star Milo Ventimiglia, who joined the cast as a mystery handsome man that catches Midge's attention, only to spectacularly fallout with her by the season's end when they sleep together and their tryst is interrupted by his wife.

But it seems for whatever reason, they may have patched things up soon enough, and were seen filming a scene outside a subway station in July 2022... though whether that's a good or bad thing remains to be seen. Will he be a new romantic interest? Will he even get a name? We'll find out soon enough.

Meanwhile Gilmore Girls icon Kelly Bishop appeared briefly and quickly in season four, despite the hype around their inclusion. Maybe there's more for them than they initially let on.

How they factor in just yet though remains to be seen.

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel season 5 plot: What will happen?

Across season four, Midge found herself moving into a new realm by taking over an illegal strip club and renovating it. But when the club was raided, she was in desperate need of a Hail Mary.

When Lenny Bruce (Luke Kirby) appears to offer her the chance for an opening slot at the prestigious Carnegie Hall, she turns him down. He later chastises her for being so picky about the opportunities that are being afforded to her when she's not in a position to do so. At least they finally get together for a bit, after years of tension.

In finale 'How Do You Get to Carnegie Hall?', Midge ends up storming out of the venue and into the blizzard outside after her argument with Lenny, who was headlining that evening. She clearly has a lot to think about and a game plan to consider.

In the final moments, we see her looking up at a billboard for The Gordon Ford Show – the same TV series where she'd previously turned down an opening spot.

It's been confirmed Luke Kirby, who plays Lenny Bruce (a real-life comedian of the era), will be back, but the character's battle with drug addiction will soon start to take hold.

In reality, Lenny died from a morphine overdose in 1966, aged just 40. In the timeline of the series, that's only five years from where we leave him with Maisel in season four.

While it's unlikely we'll see it happen in season four, a time jump for the fifth season would allow the show to address this if it wanted to.

"We felt a bit of a kind of duty to sort of start touching on the aspects of Lenny Bruce's life that kind of led up to his dying young," Luke told Us Weekly. "We're sort of bringing Lenny Bruce a little bit down to Earth this season and kind of exploring that a little bit."
