Mariah Carey shades viral 'Shake it Off' remix on Twitter, Questlove intervenes

Mariah Carey is not only the queen of Christmas, she may also be the queen of shade.

Rapper YTK released his song "Let if Off" Friday which uses an uncleared sample of Carey's 2005 hit song "Shake it Off" from her album "The Emancipation of Mimi." The rapper posted the video on Twitter and received more than 3,200 retweets. Later, Twitter user @rnbtommy called out Carey. .

"Mariah Carey has 24 hours to respond," @rnbtommy wrote, quote tweeting the video.

The Grammy-winning artist replied Saturday: "How about y'all have 24 hours to respond to my lawyers (heart emoji)."

Fans of the five-time Grammy award winner commented on her timely clapback.

"Mariah’s humor is literally the best like how can anyone hate her," one user wrote.

Another one tweeted: "Often imitated, never duplicated. Just Mariah Carey things!"

Some users came to the rapper's defense, asking Carey not to make it a legal matter.

"Awwww come on, legend! The people love it," @thechrisfrench wrote.

An update came later Saturday, when @rnbtommy said Carey was joking. The Roots drummer Questlove also confirmed via Twitter he was in conversations with Carey about clearing the sample. The musician said he agreed to help because he had once been in the same shoes.

"I helped w the Mariah sample cause 11 years ago we were in the same situation in which Erykah has 24 hours to clear “Gone Baby Don’t Be Long” w Paul McCartney & Lenny Kravitz saw the tweet & hit up Stella to hit her pops & the song was saved," he wrote.

USA TODAY reached out to Carey and Questlove's reps for comment.

Carey added a tweet to her response by promoting the pre-order link to her some of her Pride merchandise: a rainbow fan with the word "shade" across the front.
