BOJ raises interest rates to highest in 17 years
TOKYO (Reuters) -The Bank of Japan raised interest rates on Friday to their highest since the 2008 global financial crisis, underscoring its confidence that rising wages will keep inflation stably around its 2% target. The decision marks its first rate hike since July last year and comes days after the inauguration of U.S. President Donald Trump, who is likely to keep policymakers vigilant ahead of potential repercussions from threatened higher tariffs. At the two-day meeting concluding on Friday, the BOJ raised its short-term policy rate from 0.25% to 0.5% - a level Japan has not seen in 17 years.

Yen choppy after BOJ hikes rates; yuan, Antipodean peers rise on Trump comments
SINGAPORE (Reuters) -The yen was choppy after the Bank of Japan (BOJ) delivered a widely anticipated rate hike on Friday, while the Australian and New Zealand dollars surged on comments from U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting a softer stance on tariffs against China. The BOJ raised rates by 25 basis points at the conclusion of its two-day policy meeting, in a move that had been well telegraphed by policymakers prior to the outcome. Focus now turns to BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda's post-meeting briefing later in the day for clues on the pace and timing of further increases.
