World Bank warns that US tariffs could reduce global growth outlook
The World Bank on Thursday warned that U.S. across-the-board tariffs of 10% could reduce already lackluster global economic growth of 2.7% in 2025 by 0.3 percentage point if America's trading partners retaliate with tariffs of their own. Such tariffs, promised by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, could cut U.S. growth - forecast to reach 2.3% in 2025 - by 0.9% if retaliatory measures are imposed, the bank said, citing economic simulations. Trump, who takes office Monday, has proposed a 10% tariff on global imports, a 25% punitive duty on imports from Canada and Mexico until they clamp down on drugs and migrants crossing borders into the U.S., and a 60% tariff on Chinese goods.

OPINION - An economy making unhappy noises, major own goals... Rachel Reeves needs a vibe shift
The Chancellor is six months into the job, with the finest brains of the Treasury and 11 Downing Street on speed dial for advice, and a debut Budget under her belt. The solid growth that was bounding along at a healthy lick of around 0.6% per quarter in the dying days of the Rishi Sunak era hit the buffers at almost exactly the point at which Keir Starmer walked into Number 10 with the Chancellor as his neighbour. Meanwhile, gilt yields — the interest rate that investors demand in return for buying the bonds that keep the wheels of government turning — have spiked by roughly an entire percentage point since last Autumn.

FCC rejects complaints over ABC presidential debate, Harris TV appearances
The Federal Communications Commission on Thursday rejected complaints about how ABC News moderated the pre-election TV debate between U.S. President Joe Biden and Republican rival Donald Trump, and appearances of Vice President Kamala Harris on CBS' "60 Minutes" and NBC's "Saturday Night Live." In a statement, outgoing FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel said the commission was rejecting complaints that "seek to weaponize the licensing authority of the FCC in a way that is fundamentally at odds with the First Amendment." An advocacy group asked the FCC in 2023 to deny a licence renewal for WTXF-TV, complaining that its parent Fox, which also owns Fox News, had aired "false information about election fraud" about the 2020 presidential election.

City of Whitehorse to spend $300,000 on Robert Service Way landslide mitigation efforts this year
The City of Whitehorse has allocated $300,000 for responding to the landslide risk along Robert Service Way this year, with half the money going towards traffic-blocking gates. The gates, set to be installed this spring, will be installed at the roundabout exit after Fourth Avenue and at another point before the road connects to the Alaska Highway — a stretch where the escarpment bordering the road has proven unstable in recent years. The subject first came up at a city council meeting on Jan. 6
