Maple Leafs relax dress code for players

The Toronto Maple Leafs are pushing the envelope yet again, but this time it's with some nice polos and slacks.

While most NHL teams will be honouring the old tradition of players showing up to games in a suit and tie, the Leafs’ players will be able to show up in “business casual” attire this season.

“I think it’s a little bit relaxed, a happy medium between casual and whatever a suit and tie would be, so it’s nice to mix it up a little bit and have fun with it,” star centre Auston Matthews said on Sunday.

Matthews has been involved with the fashion world for long enough that he is certainly going to be turning heads for the must-watch pre-game trip to the locker room.

Others are less likely to “have fun with it,” and are keeping the focus on how the team looks on the ice.

“Yeah, there’s been talks but nothing too crazy yet,” winger Mitch Marner said. “We’ll see; we have to make sure the game on the ice is the same as it always is and folks will always have that stuff after.”

When asked about his teammates' fashion senses, Marner called out defenceman T.J. Brodie’s style, while predictably praising Matthews for having the best.

“We’re certainly going to try to keep it professional, but we’re going to have a little bit more freedom, have it relaxed a little bit,” stoic Leafs captain John Tavares said. “I think it’s gone well so far, guys have been really receptive and really looking forward to it.

“I don’t think anyone will worry too much about what I got to wear compared to some of the other guys; you know, they’re really into their style and their fashion. For me, kind of keep it simple.”

While Matthews might not show up in anything fresh off the runway, being comfortable on your commute certainly makes things more pleasant.
