Manchester United are without three of their first-choice back four for tonight’s Champions League clash with Villarreal as Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka miss out.

Maguire limped out of Saturday’s listless 1-0 Premier League defeat to Aston Villa with a calf injury and is set for a “few weeks” on the sidelines, according to manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

There had been better news with regards to Luke Shaw, who was also injured against Villa and has missed training but was thought to have some chance of being involved. However, the Englishman is not even on the bench.

Marcus Rashford is not yet ready to return to action, but United have received a sizeable boost with the news that the England forward could return to full training as soon as next week after undergoing shoulder surgery following the European Championship.

Winger Amad Diallo remains sidelined with a thigh problem, while Wan-Bissaka is serving a Champions League suspension following his first-half red card in the defeat by Swiss side Young Boys in the Group F opener a fortnight ago.

Victor Lindelof partners Raphael Varane in the heart of defence in Maguire’s absence, while Diogo Dalot and Alex Telles come in at full-back..
