Manchester United vs Crystal Palace - LIVE!

Marcus Rashford won a first-half penalty before scoring himself in the second half as Manchester United survived a straight red card for Casemiro to beat Crystal Palace 2-1 in the Premier League at Old Trafford.

The visitors found themselves behind early when a VAR check showed Will Hughes had handled a ball from Rashford in the box, and Bruno Fernandes sent Vincent Guaita the wrong way from the spot in the seventh minute. With Palace struggling to create chances, Rashford netted the second with a simple finish after a move that featured some superb short passing as United looked set to cruise to victory.

However, Palace were thrown a lifeline when Casemiro was shown a straight red card for grabbing Hughes by the throat as both sides clashed following a tackle on Antony, and Jeffrey Schlupp pulled a goal back in the 76th minute to give them hope. The visitors poured forward looking for an equaliser but United coach Erik ten Hag sent on Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof to help stem the onslaught as they hung on for the win.

Manchester United made it 13 wins in row at home as they battled to a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

Not since Real Sociedad won at Old Trafford in the Europa League in September have Erik ten Hag’s side suffered defeat on home soil, and that record did not appear to be in any danger when Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford put the hosts two goals up.

Casemiro was shown a straight red though for grabbing Will Hughes by the neck with 20 minutes remaining, and that changed the game. Jeffrey Schlupp halved the deficit with a smart finish to set up a grandstand finish, but the visitors could not find a late equaliser.

Ten Hag discusses Casemiro red

17:50 , Matt Verri

“Casemiro crossed the line, you saw that.

“However, I’m unhappy with the inconsistent refereeing. Not only this game but also in Palace. They elbowed Martinez, and then last week with Eriksen.

“A lot of other players crossed the line, including some Crystal Palace players. VAR didn’t intervene with them.”

United bow for Sabitzer

17:37 , Matt Verri

Marcel Sabitzer made his Manchester United debut this afternoon.

He featured for ten minutes off the bench - very much a performance where attacking ambition was not required!

Casemiro back for Wembley

17:20 , Matt Verri

So Casemiro will miss Man United’s next three matches after his red card this afternoon.

Two games against Leeds to come before a clash against Leicester - he will be unavailable for all of those.

His next match for the club will be the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle.

Around the grounds...

17:10 , Matt Verri

Exciting afternoon in the Premier League, plenty of goals. Liverpool fans have endured another miserable 90 minutes, Jurgen Klopp’s side continue to be a complete mess.

Here are the final scores from elsewhere in the top-flight:

Aston Villa 2-4 Leicester

Wolves 3-0 Liverpool

Brentford 3-0 Southampton

Brighton 1-0 Bournemouth

Rashford does it again!

17:04 , Matt Verri

That’s now 11 goals in 13 matches for Rashford since the World Cup, a brilliant run of form.

He’s only failed to score in three of those games.

FT: Man United 2-1 Crystal Palace

16:59 , Matt Verri

Man United hold on!

It didn’t look like it was going to be a nervy afternoon when Fernandes and Rashford put them 2-0 up and in complete control.

Casemiro picked up a ridiculous red card though and Schlupp halved the deficit to set up a grandstand finish.

United stand firm though and make it 13 home wins in a row.

16:57 , Matt Verri

90+7 mins: We’ve played seven minutes, but not done yet.

Shaw taking an age over every throw-in, United just looking to pump it long now. Palace goal kick but they don’t care, it’s at the right end of the pitch for United.

16:55 , Matt Verri

90+5 mins: Clyne with the throw-in, Shaw heads it out again. Ball kids have gone missing...

United doing a good job of slowing things down and making this incredibly scrappy. Palace can’t get any momentum going.

16:53 , Matt Verri

90+3 mins: Rashford is down, Vieira raging on the touchline about what he feels is time-wasting.

Still got to be at least five minutes left for his side to find an equaliser.

16:50 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Sabitzer wins the ball back and he sets Rashford away... but the whistle has gone!

Palace get the free-kick and Old Trafford has absolutelt erupted. Furious with that decision.

Seven minutes added on! That hasn’t helped the mood.

16:47 , Matt Verri

87 mins: Wan-Bissaka and Garnacho off, Lindelof and Maguire on.

Ten Hag wants every defender he can find on the pitch! Garnacho only got brought on about 25 minutes ago, but he’s off now.

Mateta with a chance in the box, glances a header at goal but he can’t direct it.

16:45 , Matt Verri

85 mins: Ahamada and Mateta on for Palace, Vieira throwing everything at this now.

Sabitzer is also on for his United debut, and he holds the ball up nicely for his side. Rashford loses it though, here come Palace again!

16:42 , Matt Verri

82 mins: This is going to be a long, long ten minutes for United.

Olise and Eze look really sharp, causing the hosts plenty of problems now. Got to imagine there will be at least five minutes of added time too.

16:39 , Matt Verri

79 mins: United fans furious as they demand play is stopped, with two of the home players down.

The hosts briefly had seven outfield players there - Fernandes was caught by an elbow from the referee!

GOAL! Man United 2-1 Crystal Palace | Jeffrey Schlupp 76'

16:36 , Matt Verri

Another Palace corner, Olise swings it in. Guehi powers the header at goal and it’s a great save from De Gea. United under huge pressure all of a sudden.

IT’S 2-1 NOW!

Great delivery, falls for Schlupp and he backheels it past De Gea! Superb finish.

16:34 , Matt Verri

74 mins: Hughes off, Lokonga on for his Palace debut.

Visitors full of confidence now they have the extra man. Edouard tries his luck from a tight angle, just wide!

RED CARD!

16:30 , Matt Verri

CASEMIRO IS OFF!

Well then. A VAR check, replays show Casemiro did grab Hughes around the neck and that’s enough for him to be sent off.

Game on?

16:28 , Matt Verri

68 mins: Handbags on the touchline, as plenty of players get involved in some pushing and shoving.

Antony and Schlupp into the book for their roles in the chaos - VAR with a brief check for a red card.

16:26 , Matt Verri

66 mins: It was Shaw with that assist and the ball comes in once again with Rashford lurking, cleared away this time.

United have got a huge lift from that goal, they’ve gone back to completely dominating things now.

GOAL! Man United 2-0 Crystal Palace | Marcus Rashford 63'

16:23 , Matt Verri

WHO ELSE?

Rashford has his goal and United have control. Ball comes into the box, Rashford from six yards out is unmarked and he’s never missing from there.

Strong stat!

16:21 , Matt Verri

16:19 , Matt Verri

60 mins: Fernandes fine to continue, but Man United will make their first change of the afternoon.

Garnacho on, Weghorst the man to come off. Looks like Rashford will be shifting into the middle.

16:18 , Matt Verri

58 mins: Concern here for Fernandes, who is down and will need some treatment.

Looks to have maybe twisted something as he was challenged, appears to be a painful one for the Portuguese star.

16:16 , Matt Verri

56 mins: There we go!

Rashford suddenly bursts into life, as he cuts inside onto his right foot and looks to find the far corner. Sails over the bar though, Guaita always fairly confident he wasn’t going to be required there.

16:15 , Matt Verri

55 mins: Martinez has been brilliant at the back, again he swiftly halts a Palace attack as Edouard looks to be leading a counter.

Ten minutes into the second-half and the hosts are yet to have an attack of any real seriousness.

16:13 , Matt Verri

53 mins: United haven’t really got going since the break, no sign of them offering anything in attack.

Instead it’s a Palace corner, swung in by Olise. Doucoure keeps it in play after it was initially cleared, Hughes back in and it hits the referee. Well defended.

16:10 , Matt Verri

50 mins: That was a promising opportunity for Palace, Edouard didn’t have the speed though.

He’s away in behind, can’t get away from Martinez though and Olise can’t get up with him in time. Martinez does well to clear the danger.

16:08 , Matt Verri

48 mins: Fred loses his balance on the touchline, ends up sat on the floor with Erik ten Hag looking down at him. Not quite the plan.

Relatively low-key start to the half, the United boss will be keen for his side to push for a second goal and make this far more comfortable.

Back underway!

16:05 , Matt Verri

Up and running again at Old Trafford, no changes for either side.

16:02 , Matt Verri

There have been 12 shots from Man United so far, four of those on target.

Schlupp’s shot from distance the only time De Gea was troubled in that 45 minutes. The stats very much in United’s favour.

Elsewhere in the Premier League

15:54 , Matt Verri

There have been plenty of goals in the Premier League so far this afternoon. Here are the HT scores from around the grounds... look away now Liverpool fans.

Aston Villa 2-3 Leicester

Wolves 2-0 Liverpool

Brentford 2-0 Southampton

Brighton 0-0 Bournemouth

HT: Man United 1-0 Crystal Palace

15:50 , Matt Verri

Guehi nods the free-kick behind for a corner, just about time for United to take this.

Fernandes takes it short, it’s a complete mess from Man United and that will be half-time.

They have the lead through Fernandes’ penalty, and Rashford went close a couple of times to doubling the advantage. Palace still in this though.

 (REUTERS)
(REUTERS)

15:47 , Matt Verri

45+1 mins: United have eased right off in this little spell, after a dominant 35 minutes or so.

Two minutes added on at the end of the half, Palace don’t want half-time to come at this rate. Ayew whips a cross in, De Gea claims well.

Antony brings the ball forward, Mitchell with the foul and he earns himself a yellow card.

15:44 , Matt Verri

43 mins: One Palace shot and the second quickly follows!

Schlupp with space about 20 yards out, catches the strike nicely but it’s a comfortable enough save for De Gea. Palace having a decent spell here ahead of half-time.

15:41 , Matt Verri

39 mins: Better from Palace, keep the ball well and work their way into Man United territory.

Olise looks to whip a cross into the box towards Edouard, wins a corner for the visitors. Palace have to make the most of these.

It’s Olise who sends it in, Richards unable to divert it at goal. Not far away from that being a real chance, he couldn’t quite get up though.

15:38 , Matt Verri

36 mins: Home fans briefly up there, Fred sends the ball into the side netting.

A few of those on the opposite side of Old Trafford though that was in for a second - shot wasn’t too far away at all.

15:35 , Matt Verri

33 mins: Casemiro wins a corner for the hosts, who continue to push for a second goal. Palace just about keeping them at bay for now.

Taken short, comes out to Antony who hammers an effort at goal from distance. Great defending... from Varane. Blocked the effort from his own team-mate.

15:33 , Matt Verri

31 mins: Lovely touch from Rashford to bring the ball down and he can drive at the defence.

Gets the shot away, always rising though and this time Guaita isn’t forced into action. Rashford very much looking like a man who will be on the scoresheet before long.

15:29 , Matt Verri

28 mins: Big save from Guaita!

Palace lose it and United very nearly make them pay. Rashford on the ball, fires the effort at the near post but Guaita makes himself big and denies the United man.

15:27 , Matt Verri

25 mins: Not a huge amount of pace in the match, United fully in control.

Palace not able to offer too much of a threat on the counter yet, their best moments have come from set-pieces. Olise swings this one in, De Gea claims with Guehi lurking behind.

15:23 , Matt Verri

22 mins: Corner for United, who continue to dominate proceedings.

Fernandes swings it in, flicked on by Rashford but Richards is there to clear. Some very hopeful appeals for another United penalty - not this time.

15:21 , Matt Verri

19 mins: Fernandes plays it wide to Shaw, who slides it through to Rashford.

Everyone knows he’s offside, including Rashford, but on we go. After a fairly pointless few seconds the flag eventually goes up.

15:19 , Matt Verri

17 mins: Fernandes has scored or assisted in every Premier League match Man United have played so far in 2023. Decent start to the year. He’s been heavily involved early on in here.

Martinez with a late challenge on Schlupp, Vieira less than impressed on the touchline. Defender does well to avoid a yellow card for that.

15:15 , Matt Verri

14 mins: Weghorst almost doubles the lead from the corner, he’s always going to be a threat from set-pieces.

Good save from Guaita, who then claims the ball as it comes back into the box. Safe to say he’s in no rush at all to let go of it.

15:14 , Matt Verri

12 mins: United looking really confident, as you’d expect. Been a long time since they suffered defeat at Old Trafford.

Palace made a bright start in the opening couple of minutes, but they’re struggling now. Antony finds Wan-Bissaka on the overlap, his ball in is charged behind for a corner.

15:11 , Matt Verri

9 mins: Guaita looks to have a problem in goal for Palace, not moving very well.

United are piling forward again, Old Trafford bouncing after that early goal. Going to be a long afternoon at this rate for the visitors.

GOAL! Man United 1-0 Crystal Palace | Bruno Fernandes 7'

15:08 , Matt Verri

FERNANDES MAKES NO MISTAKE!

He strolls up and rolls it into the back of the net, never looked like missing that. Perfect start for the hosts.

PENALTY MAN UNITED!

15:08 , Matt Verri

It’s given!

Hughes perplexed. Doesn’t matter though, VAR has given it. United penalty in the opening minutes.

15:06 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Good start to this match, action at both ends of the pitch.

Richards closes Shaw down, and there’s then appeals for a United penalty. Referee could not have less interest in that.

Looks like it did hit Hughes’ arm, not a hugely natural position to block Rashford’s cross. VAR having a look.

15:04 , Matt Verri

3 mins: Free-kick for Palace in the opening moments, and it leads to the first corner of the match. Olise unable to make the most of that set-piece but the visitors have another chance.

In it comes, Olise takes this too but it comes to nothing as United clear their lines.

KICK-OFF!

15:02 , Matt Verri

A minute’s silence has been observed ahead of kick-off, well observed from all corners of the ground.

We’re up and running at Old Trafford!

14:58 , Matt Verri

Vieira and Ten Hag bring out wreaths and lay them on the centre circle, as both clubs remember all of those who lost their lives in the Munich air disaster.

Family members of some of the victims are in attendance this afternoon at the ground.

Here we go...

14:56 , Matt Verri

Players are in the tunnel, they’ll be out onto the Old Trafford pitch any minute now.

For all United are in sensational form at home, Palace have been a problem for them many times. A draw last month, defeat at the end of the last season and a few Old Trafford shocks in recent seasons.

Ten Hag knows his side cannot afford to be complacent.

Palace very much mid-table

14:51 , Matt Verri

So much of the Premier League table is very congested, but Crystal Palace have found a bit of room for themselves.

They sit 12th, six points ahead of Leicester in 14th but four points behind Aston Villa in 11th. They’ll want to make sure they’re tagging onto that group above them, rather than falling into the relegation battle below.

Tributes paid at Old Trafford

14:43 , Matt Verri

The Busby Babes are honoured on the Old Trafford programme this afternoon.

Monday marks the 65th anniversary of the Munich air disaster, plenty of fans have been outside the ground already today paying their tributes.

Ten Hag’s pre-match thoughts

14:35 , Matt Verri

”Palace are a difficult team. They have a physical approach and a good manager with really good ideas about winning football games, so we have to be ready and play better than we did at Palace.

“We need to be better in defence and be better in the way we play and have more energy and focus on the pitch than we had before.’’

Not long now...

14:29 , Matt Verri

About half an hour to go until kick-off now.

Man United on a run of 12 straight wins at Old Trafford - they’re strong favourites to make it 13!

Gunners slip up

14:24 , Matt Verri

Arsenal are a couple of minutes away from falling to defeat at Goodison Park - Everton set to join Manchester United as the only teams to put the Gunners in the league this season.

United will close the gap to Arsenal to eight points with victory this afternoon, though they would have played a game more.

Still plenty of ground to make up!

Looking inside the home dressing room...

New boys on the bench

14:10 , Matt Verri

Sabitzer named on the bench for Man United, as Fred partners Casemiro in midfield. Weghorst leads the line again, with Martial missing out on the squad completely.

As for Palace, Ahamada and Lokonga both on the bench, as is Eze. Olise, Edouard and Ayew start for the visitors, with Richards alongside Guehi at the back with Andersen missing out again.

We’ll soon find out...

Vieira gives Zaha update

13:47 , Matt Verri

Palace will be without Wilfried Zaha this afternoon, after he picked up a hamstring injury against Newcastle.

“He is still on the treatment table,” Vieira said in his pre-match press conference.

“His injury will take a couple of weeks. We will have to do without him. Wilfried is somebody who recovers quite quickly. We don’t want to put a date on his injury.”

Ten Hag: Eriksen hard to replace

13:40 , Matt Verri

Erik ten Hag has admitted Man United will struggle to replace Christan Eriksen.

The midfielder is set to be out until late April or early May after suffering an injury in the FA Cup against Reading, a blow that led to United moving for Marcel Sabitzer

“I think you can never fill that because every player has their own characteristics and identity, so another player will always fill it in in a different way,” Ten Hag said.“So, it doesn’t mean that you have to be less successful but it’s quite clear that Christian Eriksen, for our squad, brings top quality and he has some specifics that are hard to replace. For instance, his impact in the final third, [his] final ball.”

Familiar foes

13:33 , Matt Verri

It’s only a couple of weeks since these two sides last met.

Michael Olise delivered with a stunning free-kick to equalise in stoppage-time and earn a point for his team... not that you’d have known from his ‘celebration’!

Sancho makes Man United return

13:26 , Matt Verri

Jadon Sancho made his first appearance since October when he came off the bench against Nottingham Forest in midweek.

Erik ten Hag had previously suggested the winger was not physically or mentally ready for first-team action, but the Englishman now appears to be part of his plans again.

On Sancho, Ten Hag told reporters after Wednesday’s game: “I think it was great, the reception from the fans to him, and also that will give him even more a push to continue in the way he’s now acting, he’s just started again, the restart he’s back at Carrington for two weeks, we see that smile and hopefiully he can keep that and contribute to the team.

“He has really high standards, great capabilities to contribute to our team, especially now the team is improving, we’re playing more in the opposition half, his capabilities come in more in front and come in more, he can have more touches on the ball, that is what his game gives the best performances, the best platform to perform.”

Reasons for Palace to be confident

13:19 , Matt Verri

Crystal Palace have lost only one of the last five matches between the two sides.

They earned a point at Old Trafford in 2018, and secured famous victories in Manchester in 2019 and 2020.

A ground they’ve had plenty of success at in recent seasons!

Ten Hag on Sabitzer impact

13:10 , Matt Verri

New Manchester United signing Marcel Sabitzer could be in line for an immediate first start in the Premier League against Crystal Palace this afternoon.

The Austrian international is a fresh arrival at Old Trafford having completed a loan move from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich until the end of the season on January deadline day this week.

Sabitzer now looks ready to hit the ground running and immediately play a key role as in-form United host Palace.

“Very good,” Ten Hag told reporters at Friday’s pre-match press conference when asked how his new arrival had adapted so far. “Of course, he did only one session but you can see he’s a very fit player.

“I didn’t have a different expectation. He’s coming from Bayern Munich. German [clubs] they are always [about] fitness, [it’s] always good. So, he is [fit]. So, I think he is ready to play.

“I think he’s a really smart player. I think we gave him some guidance but I think he knows what to do, he knows the job, so he could do [start].”

Standard Sport prediction

12:56 , Matt Verri

Palace have a habit of making things tough away at the top teams and should push United close, but the Red Devils are still fancied to get the breakthrough.

Nobody has been able to stop them at Old Trafford in recent months - it looks unlikely Palace will be able to.

A 1-0 Man United win.

Crystal Palace team news

12:49 , Matt Verri

For Palace, both Albert Sambi Lokonga and Naouirou Ahamada could make their debuts. The Eagles are without two key players in Joachim Andersen and Wilfried Zaha, the winger having picked up a hamstring injury a fortnight ago.

James MacArthur and Nathan Ferguson are long-term absentees.
