Manchester United captain Harry Maguire is expected to be charged with aggravated assault after an incident with police in Mykonos, Greece, on Thursday night, The Guardian reported.
The club has been in contact with Maguire and he is “fully co-operating” with police, the club said in a brief statement.
Report: Maguire verbally abusive, hits officer
Maguire, 27, is on the island of Mykonos on vacation, per reports, and was with friends at a bar when the incident took place. Greek media cited by The Guardian said Maguire and two friends got into a “very heated altercation” with fellow English vacationers. Policemen were called to the scene and attempted to break up the brawl at around midnight.
An officer told The Guardian that a soccer player was “verbally abusive to an officer and then hit him.”
“There were several policemen there. At some point, one of the three members of the group – they were aged 27, 28, and 29 – threw a swing at one of the policemen and a fight ensued,” added police spokesperson Petros Vassilakis. “All of the three were arrested but during the effort to do so, the other two, including the football player, got violent also. They threw down at least two policemen, hit them with their fists and kicked them.
They were resisting arrest and brought to the Mykonos police station, where they were then taken by boat to Syros to face charges by a public prosecutor, per the report.
The South Aegean Police Directorate confirmed to CNN Sports that three Britons allegedly threatened police officers and attacked one of them. They did not give names.
Manchester United aware of incident
Manchester United released a statement Friday, per reports.
“The club is aware of an alleged incident involving Harry Maguire in Mykonos last night. Contact has been made with Harry, and he is fully co-operating with the Greek authorities. At this time we will be making no further comment.”
United signed Maguire last summer for a world-record transfer fee for a center back. Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær quickly made him a captain.
The Red Devils finished third in the Premier League this past season. On Monday, they lost to Sevilla 2-1 in the Europa League semifinals. United will open the 2020-21 EPL campaign on Sept. 19.
