Manchester Airport: 'No security threat' after reports of suspicious package prompted Terminal 2 closure

Manchester Airport has said police are satisfied there is no security threat after officers investigated reports of a suspicious package.

Terminal 2 was shut following the incident and all flights then operated from Terminal 1.

But the cordon has now been lifted and Terminal 2 is due to reopen, the airport has said.

Passengers and staff were evacuated from the terminal because of the alert, which began at around 3.20pm.

Officers blocked off all approaches to the terminal as people left the facility, according to the Manchester Evening News.

There had been reports that the evacuation was prompted by a 'trigger' as a person went through security.

A security scanner was believed to have picked up a suspicious package, claimed the newspaper's website, which added that police were called to investigate the baggage item and the alarm was raised.

A Manchester Airport spokesperson said late on Tuesday evening: "Following its investigation into a suspicious package reported in Terminal 2, Greater Manchester Police is satisfied that there is no security threat and has lifted the cordon that was in place.

"We thank passengers for their patience and will reopen Terminal 2 later this evening."

In an earlier statement, an airport spokesperson said: "Terminal 2 remains closed whilst Greater Manchester Police continue to assess reports of a suspicious package there.

"All flights will operate from Terminal 1 until further notice."

Greater Manchester Police had said: "Police were called with a report of a suspicious package in Terminal 2 of Manchester Airport at around 3.20pm.

"The terminal has been evacuated as per standard procedure and a cordon has been put in place as a safety precaution while an assessment is carried out."
