Manatee County recovery updates: School resumes Tuesday, trash pickup returns

See the latest updates from Monday here.

Manatee County’s gradual recovery from Hurricane Ian continued over the weekend, but conditions are still far from normal.

As of Sunday, over 43,000 homes remained without power, and work is still underway to assess local storm damage and repair infrastructure.

School is set to resume this week, and local organizations have kicked into gear to provide food and resources to those impacted by the storm.

Here’s the latest on schools reopening, power outages, utilities and more.

School resumes Tuesday

Manatee County schools and offices will reopen Tuesday for normal operations, the school district announced Sunday afternoon.

Classes, bus transportation, after-school activities and athletics will resume.

“We want to thank all the state and local agencies who have made it possible for us to resume instruction for our students so quickly,” the district’s announcement said.

Power outages

As of Sunday evening, over 43,000 homes remain without power in Manatee County, according to power outage maps.

Florida Power and Light, the county’s major electricity provider, estimates that most homes will have power restored by Wednesday, Oct. 5 at the latest. But a sliver of southern Manatee might not be restored until Oct. 9, the company said.

The county’s other electricity provider, Peace River Electric Cooperative, still has just under 1,000 customers without electricity as of Sunday, the company’s power outage map shows.

Most boil water notices lifted, lift stations restored

Boil water notices put in place for some parts of Manatee County after Hurricane Ian have mostly been lifted.

A boil water notice remains in effect for three mobile home communities — Terra Ceia Village, Leisure Lake Co-Op and Sugar Creek Mobile Home Park Estates. Water quality testing is still underway for those communities, Manatee County said Sunday.

County officials last week asked residents to limit activities that produce wastewater after lift stations were taken offline by the storm. Power has been restored to the lift stations, and residents can resume normal levels of water use for flushing, bathing and laundry, the county said Sunday.
