A man went missing decades ago, cops say. His remains may have been found near Utah lake
Human remains believed to be a man missing for more than two decades were found near a Utah lake, officials said.
The bones have been in the field near Utah Lake between Provo and Orem for at least 23 years, based on the condition they a were in, the Utah County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release on Jan. 5.
An ID from 1999 with the name John Everett Booth and torn clothing was found near the bones, prompting deputies to find the man’s relatives. He would have been 75 years old.
Within one day of posting the man’s photo, family members contacted the sheriff’s office.
Deputies said it could take several months before the medical examiner positively identifies the remains as Booth.
@UCSO Detectives are trying to positively identify human remains found near the shore of Utah Lake last October. Identification was found with the remains but we haven’t been able to find family or positively ID the remains as those of the man in the ID. https://t.co/F3RPoe4wW8 pic.twitter.com/xMwG1rXc4e

The bones were found about 350 feet from the lake in an area that had been previously covered in phragmites — an invasive wetland grass — since 2018.
The grass had been as high as 6 to 8 feet tall until it was cut along most of the area, deputies said, which may have exposed the bones.
“These clothing remnants also showed significant signs of aging, consistent with having been in that location for many years,” the news release states.
Authorities tried looking for Booth at “medical and mental health providers, law enforcement agencies, addresses, Utah Transit Authority, State of Utah and jail booking records” but didn’t find anything except an arrest in 1995.
Multiple items were found with the bones:
A Utah ID.
Utah Transit Authority Reduced Fare card.
Utah Horizon food stamps card.
Smith’s Fresh Values frequent shopper card.
”Winner” brand shoe.
A blue jacket.
Timex analog watch.
