Man struck by van door and killed during crash on Kansas Turnpike in Wyandotte County

A 42-year-old North Carolina man was killed when he was struck by a van’s door during a collision Sunday on the Kansas Turnpike in Kansas City, Kansas, according to the highway patrol.

The Kansas Highway Patrol identified the victim as Chris McClellan of Columbus, North Carolina.

The crash occurred about 6:30 p.m. along eastbound Interstate 70 just west of the Interstate 635 interchange, according to a crash report on the Kansas Highway Patrol’s website.

A 2018 Honda Civic was headed east in the left lane when it struck the rear quarter panel and sliding door of a 2017 Ford Transit Van with North Carolina license plates that had stopped on the left shoulder.

The sliding door struck McClellan, who was listed as a pedestrian in the crash report, fatally injuring him. No driver was listed for the Transit Van.

A third vehicle, a 2020 BMX X5 M, struck the door from the Transit Van, which was lying in the left lane.

The driver of the Civic, a 20-year-old Topeka resident, was taken to a hospital after complaining about pain. The driver and passenger in the BMW, both from St. Louis, were not injured
