Man reconsiders engagement after discovering his fiancée’s ‘major’ financial secret: ‘This is a huge breach of trust’

A man was stunned to learn his fiancée had been secretly stashing money away for years.

He took to Reddit’s “Relationship Advice” forum for help. His girlfriend always insisted she made considerably less money than he did. Because of this, he covered most of her expenses. Now that the couple is getting married, she confessed that she had saved thousands of dollars.

“My girlfriend and I have been in a relationship for four and a half years and living together for just a little less than three years,” the Reddit poster said. “We also got engaged recently. When we first moved in together we ran down through our finances. At the time I was making $45,000 while she was making $20,000.”

“She was actually making $28,000 but told me the lower value. We decided our expenditure according to those and I paid for most of the stuff since my income was greater than hers. In the last three years I have gone up to making $65,000 while she to $23,000 (in reality $32,000).”

Christian Cowan’s first foray into menswear lets everyone be ‘part of that fantasy’:

The girlfriend confessed to deceiving him about her salary. But now he isn’t sure what to do.

“When we were sitting down and planning for our future together she told me she wanted to confess something and then told me that she lied about her income for the last three years and saved $22,000. I told her that was f***** up and she effectively made a buck off me by saving her income and using me to subsidize her living,” he explained.

“I told her that I consider this financial abuse and she got a little defensive. For now, her solution to this [is to give me pay me back $22,000] and we can forget about this. I have thought about this but I don’t think taking money from her is going to make me feel better because I always thought of my money as ours and once (if) we get married it will be ours legally anyways. She has been apologetic but I don’t know how sincere it is given that she is capable of lying to this extent and mooching off her partner.”

Redditors thought the fiancée’s behavior raised a lot of red flags.

“This is a huge breach of trust,” a person commented.

“She lied to him. She hid a major thing for years,” another said.

“Relationships are built on trust. She broke your trust and lied to you for years,” someone added.
