'Man Down' Clip: See Shia LaBeouf Get Grilled by Gary Oldman (Exclusive)

In a shift from recent years, Shia LaBeouf has gotten more attention in 2016 for his acting abilities than bizarro art installations or general misdeeds. First there was the Cannes sensation American Honey, which just earned LaBeouf an Independent Spirit Award nomination, and now comes the military thriller Man Down. LaBeouf has scored some serious props for the role, with Variety even comparing his dramatic approach to the likes of Marlon Brando and Montgomery Cliff.

You can get a look at LaBeouf’s work in Man Down in the exclusive clip above. He plays Gabriel Drummer, a U.S. Marine who returns home from a tour in Afghanistan and embarks on a desperate search for his estranged son (Charlie Shotwell) and wife (Kate Mara).

In the scene featured here, Drummer is grilled by his counselor, Peyton (Gary Oldman), about “the incident” that occurred on his tour of duty alongside his closest friend on the squad, Cpl. Devin Roberts (Jai Courtney). It’s clear from Drummer’s somber disposition that their mission went awry, and will likely have a lingering effect not only on his psychological state but the film’s subsequent events. Can Peyton handle the truth? (Editor’s note: Sorry, but it is impossible not to reference A Few Good Men in circumstances such as these.)

Man Down was co-written and directed by Dito Montiel, who previously worked with LaBeouf on the 2006 indie breakout A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints. The film also stars Clifton Collins Jr. in a key role as the man who may hold the secrets to the whereabouts of Drummer’s family. It’s now in theaters.
