A 35-year-old man has died following an ATV-related incident in Kangiqsualujjuaq, Nunavik police confirmed in an email to Nunatsiaq News Monday.

The incident occurred at around 8 p.m. Sunday approximately two kilometres outside of town, said Jean-Francois Morin, Nunavik Police Service’s deputy chief of operations.

Another passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

“The file is still under investigation, a male is currently detained in connection to the incident and alcohol could have been a factor,” Morin wrote.

“The incident is under investigation so no other information can be shared at this time.”

Morin did not provide the name of the man who died, nor did he identify the person who was injured or taken into custody.

In June, Morin told Nunatsiaq News that Nunavik has seen a rise in vehicle-related incidents in recent years. In some communities, Nunavik police have implemented road checks to test whether drivers are intoxicated.
