Major intersection in Plaza Midwood closes for pipe repairs — again

A wastewater overflow has again closed the Plaza Midwood intersection that saw a massive sewage spill in July.

Charlotte Water crews closed Central Avenue at Hawthorne Lane, near Overton Row Apartments and Moo & Brew, Tuesday morning to repair a water pipe under the railroad crossing. Crews will take the leaking pipe section offline and install a new pipe near the railroad crossing, said Camden Coley, a Charlotte Water spokesperson. The repairs could take at least two weeks, but nearby businesses will still be accessible, according to Charlotte Water on Twitter.

The same intersection closed for more than a week in July after a different pipe leak 17 feet underground allowed more than 14,000 gallons of sewage to spill into a nearby creek in the Catawba River watershed.

During the closure, drivers and cyclists will need to find alternate routes using The Plaza, Parkwood Avenue and Hawthorne Lane.
