Bulgarian Workers 'Liberated' From Counterfeit Cigarette Factories in Spain
Spanish authorities said on April 24 they had “liberated” 11 Bulgarian workers who were held in two counterfeit cigarette factories, seizing nearly 33 tons of tobacco leaf and six million cigarettes in the process.According to the Spanish Ministry of Interior, the operations occurred in the provinces of Madrid and Cordoba, where two “large and sophisticated facilities dedicated to the illicit manufacture of cigarettes” were dismantled.The ministry said 20 people were arrested, and that the Bulgarian workers had been held “without the possibility of leaving” at the sites.“Within both infrastructures, the work and living areas of the workers were fully differentiated, the latter being where the workers were permanently housed,” the ministry said. British industrial orders dropped this month, despite a rise in optimism among manufacturers to its highest since July 2021, the Confederation of British Industry said on Wednesday. The CBI's monthly industrial orders balance fell to -23 in April from -18 in March, below economists' forecasts in a Reuters poll for a slight improvement to -16 and well beneath the survey's long-run average of -13. However, the CBI's quarterly business optimism gauge rose sharply to its highest in nearly three years at +9, up from -3 in January and well above its long-run average of -7.
