Eyewear maker EssilorLuxottica posted on Thursday a 5.5% increase in revenues in the first quarter, thanks to solid growth in Europe and despite a weak North America performance and a tougher basis of comparison. Sales in North America, the group's biggest market, rose 1.7% at constant exchange rates, hit by a weak performance from the sunglasses category. "With this positive momentum, we approach the first half of the year with optimism and remain confident in our strategic vision and our ability to deliver on our long-term outlook", Francesco Milleri, EssilorLuxottica's Chairman and Chief Executive, and Paul du Saillant, Deputy CEO, said in a statement.

CALGARY — A new report says if high interest rates persist, it will be harder and more costly for society to transition to a net-zero economy. The report by global consultancy Wood Mackenzie says high interest rates are putting disproportionate pressure on renewable energy developers as well as on emerging technologies like carbon capture and storage and hydrogen. The new and developing industries will require significant capital investments that will be more expensive because of the high cost o

The 78-year-old Nobel laureate was held under house arrest for a total of 15 years under a previous junta.

Council, staff, and the public were all stirred by the topic of short-term rentals (STR) in the commercial (C1) and lakeshore (LD-1) zones of the Village. “It’s no secret that I’m done with this topic,” said CAO Wayne Robinson. In most areas of Nakusp, STRs are allowed as long as the owner or tenant resides on the property long-term. For C1 and LD-1 however, a special provision was created to allow a property without a long-term resident to operate as an STR for 90 days. Property owners must ind

According to the National Association of Realtors, the number of homes for sale rose 4.7% in March from February to 1.11 million. However, the number of homes sold fell 4.3% from the prior month. With mortgage rates nearing 7%, inventory and pricing remain a key issue for home buyers. HousingWire Lead Analyst Logan Mohtashami joins Yahoo Finance to discuss the housing market, mortgage rates, and how the recent numbers impact the market. Mohtashami lays out one of the top considerations for the housing market: "Pricing is the thing that shocked everybody, but keep it simple. We are near record lows in inventory, and home sales aren't crashing anymore. 2022 was very abnormal. We had the biggest home sale crash ever recorded in history, and then that kind of stopped after November of 2022. It's basically an equilibrium fight right now. The higher rates go, the weakness in pricing can continue. If rates fall back down with inventory this low, pricing gets better." Watch the video above to hear why Mohtashami thinks getting mortgage rates down to 6% and staying there will be key to a housing market recovery. Plans by Britain's financial regulator to require firms to set targets for improving diversity could be counterproductive, UK business and women minister Kemi Badenoch said on Thursday. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and the Bank of England's Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) last September proposed guidance for financial firms to tackle sexual harassment and bullying, along with new requirements for large banks and insurers to set targets to improve diversity and inclusion. "My role as minister for women and equalities in particular often involves the killing of bad idea," Badenoch told a conference held by TheCityUK, a financial industry body.
