Hundreds of thousands of Argentines took to the streets of Buenos Aires on Tuesday in an anti-government march against budget cuts to public universities, the biggest protest yet against President Javier Milei's painful austerity measures. The demonstrations are the latest example of rising tension over spending cuts that are helping undo a deep fiscal deficit but causing hardship in the real economy. Mexican conglomerate Alfa on Tuesday posted a first-quarter net profit of 1.02 billion pesos ($62 million), swinging to profit from the loss of 252 million pesos it posted a year earlier, citing a strong performance by its food unit. Revenues at Alfa's chemicals arm Alpek were hit by the appreciation of the peso, which was up 8% against the U.S. dollar at the end of March compared to the previous year, though food unit Sigma scored record volumes. The conglomerate is aiming to spin off Alpek into a new listed entity to avoid the weaker results of one affecting the valuation of the other, as it previously did with its telecommunications unit Axtel and auto parts maker Nemak.

A former Washington state police officer who court documents say had a child with a teenage girl he met through a school resource program was on the run Tuesday after killing two people, including his ex-wife, who had recently obtained a protection order against him, authorities said. The Washington State Patrol late Monday issued an alert that the ex-Yakima officer, Elias Huizar, had fled with 1-year-old Roman Huizar. Huizar, 39, had a baby of that age with the 17-year-old former student, who lived with him as of early this year, court records show.

In the coming days, agencies will push out other key regulations, intended to help carry out the administration's goal to decarbonize the U.S. economy by 2050.
