(PA)Radio host Jordan North has said he’s been “mobbed” when he leaves the house after his I’m A Celebrity stint - adding he’ll “never get used” to his new-found fame.
The 30-year-old Radio 1 DJ, from York, was the runner up in this year’s I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! which was filmed in Gwrych Castle in Wales due to the pandemic.
North narrowly missed out on being crowned king of the jungle to blogger and author Giovanna Fletcher, who is the wife of McFly star Tom Fletcher.
Speaking to the Standard, North said he was “under no illusion” that he was “the least known person” in the 2020 series - but said appearing on the ITV show had changed his life in more ways than one.
“It has been the best thing I ever did,” he said. “I feel like I changed in there. I grew a lot. I am under no illusion that I was the least known person [on the series]. But my life has changed. I have to wear a cap now when I go out. I went to Tesco the other week and I was mobbed, I couldn’t get any shopping done. It is great and it is amazing and I love stopping to talk to people but yeah I couldn’t get my shopping done.”
North - who from September last year became the regular 11am-1pm weekend host on BBC Radio 1 - added: “It is weird. I am not sure I will get used to it.”
During his stint on the show, North - who is also the host of comedy agony-aunt podcast Help I Sexted My Boss - was supported by a number of Radio 1 DJs, including Greg James and Annie Mac who campaigned for him to win.
The broadcaster said, in particular, James, 35, has been a big support throughout his career.
“Greg - I cannot speak highly enough of him,” he said. “A year or so ago I was frustrated, I didn’t feel like I was getting anywhere. He told me to stick at it, to keep going. He is such a nice guy. I appreciated everyone getting behind me at Radio One so much.”
North said he was getting through the third national lockdown by running and being strict with his screen time.
“I have been running - even getting out for 20 - 30 minutes a day," he said. "It helps. Reading - getting off your phone for a bit. That helps. I stop myself from watching TV until 6pm. Then I watch The Chase on plus 1 and then A Place in the Sun that I have recorded. It’s pretty wild.”
The star said he was “grateful” to be working in an industry where many people are struggling due to Covid.
He said: “It has been pretty steady. I am so grateful. Friends and family I know are out of a job at the moment and I know a lot of people are struggling.”
