London Zoo Lioness Plays With Football as England's 'Lionesses' Progress in Euros

Asiatic lions at the ZSL London Zoo tried their paw at soccer before the England women’s team, nicknamed the Lionesses, kicked off the 2022 UEFA European Women’s Football Championship with a 1-0 win against Austria on Wednesday, July 6.

“Our pride of lions are roaring on England’s Lionesses ahead of the tournament, and they really enjoyed getting a chance to play themselves,” said zookeeper Tara Humphrey in a press release.

This footage, which the zoo said was taken on Tuesday, shows lioness Arya and her consort Bhanu tossing specially scented boomer balls, made out of material designed to resist wild play. Credit: ZSL London Zoo via Storyful
