Twenty-three boroughs saw Covid-19 cases fall by at least a quarter as the weekly total dropped by nearly 19,000 in London, official figures reveal today.

They also show confirmed cases falling faster in east London, which was worst hit by the second wave, than a swathe of the west of the city which now has the highest coronavirus rates.

The biggest drop was in Tower Hamlets of 36.8 per cent in the week to January 21, with cases down 36 per cent in Southwark, 33.5 per cent in Lewisham, 33.4 per cent in Barking and Dagenham, 33.2 per cent in Newham, and 33.1 per cent in Havering.

Among the slowest decline in cases were Ealing and Harrow in west London, both down 20.8 per cent, Hounslow, 21.9 per cent and Hillingdon 22.4 per cent.

The highest seven-day rate is now Ealing with 737 new infections per 100,000 people in the week to January 21, followed by Hounslow on 736.6 and Brent on 711.1, with rates having previously been far higher in east London.

Day by day the number of cases is falling and there were 3,816 announced on Tuesday for the capital, the second day it was below 4,000, having been at least three times higher earlier in January.

However, as hopes rise that the disease is being brought under control in the city, health chiefs are urging people to continue to follow the rules as the figures lay bare that the battle is still far from won:

- Ninteen boroughs still have a seven-day rate over 500.

- Richmond which has the lowest rate is still at 291.4, with only six other boroughs below 400: Kensington and Chelsea, Wandsworth, Islington, Camden, Westminster and Kingston, all with wealthy areas of the capital.

- The number of confirmed cases fell by 18,936 in the week to January 21, compared to the previous week.

- The highest number of weekly cases was in Ealing at 2,519.

- The number of Covid patients admitted to hospital was 4,348 in the week to January 24, with 544 on that day, down from a peak of 977 on January 6.

- The number of coronavirus patients in the city’s hospital was 6,785 as of Tuesday, down from 7,917 on the 18th.

- There were 1,158 individuals so ill that they are on ventilators, a very high number but the first time it has gone below 1,200 since January 15.

- A further 193 Covid deaths, within 28 days of people testing positive, were announced for London on Tuesday, taking the total so far during the pandemic to 12,677.

- A further 35,126 first dose vaccinations were announced yesterday to have been administered in the capital, taking the total to 612,045.
