From Esquire

With the sheer amount of seafood available in London, it's easy to forget about the city's relatively awkward distance from the sea. This only makes the restaurants that manage to serve fresh, delicious fish all the more impressive.

Admittedly, there are plenty of sad-looking prawn cocktails and rubbery rings of calamari lurking around too – but with our help, you can locate the places offering up unusual and classic catches that won't (always) cost you the earth...

London Stock

The tasting menu at London Stock offers a fine-dining experience at a comfortable £65 per head. Affordable when you consider the quality of British ingredients, the culinary talent involved (who have had experience working for Cordon Bleu and stints in Michelin-starred restaurants) plus the level of service.

There are then dishes per tasting menu, with one of the most notable being the roasted cod which is served in a soy and ginger broth with sea vegetables and mussels. The ‘Barley’ dessert, which is a malt and miso soufflé complemented by Sambrook’s Imperial Stout ice cream is another hit. (Yes, we know that it’s not fish, but this still deserves a mention nonetheless.)

It’s an under-the-radar find, located a little further afield in the centre of Wandsworth, but it’s more than worth the journey.

The staff at Kaspar's Seafood Bar & Grill, situated within the Savoy Hotel, will give you one of the warmest receptions in London whether you are staying there or not, and the menu gains top marks from top to bottom (we particularly recommend the smoked fish selection). As for the oysters, a dozen for £35 is surprisingly good value given the luxurious settings. That's not to mention the decadent art deco surroundings that make it stick long in the memory. A real experience.

Often seen as the seafood restaurant in London, J Sheekey is a West End establishment which has been around since proprietor Josef Sheekey was given permission to sell seafood in St Martin's Court in 1896 (on the provision he provide dinner for Lord Salisbury and his friends). Skip to 2017 and it is still plying theatre-goers with rich oysters and their gloriously creamy signature fish pie.

Westerns Laundry

Now for a notably newer face on the block, from the foodies that bought you North London gem, Primeur. Westerns Laundry's daily changing menu is scrawled on lined notepad paper and uploaded to Instagram. Regular favourites include cuttlefish and ham croquettes, baked lobster with fideo pasta, and squid with lemon sausage.

Wright Brothers

Two brother-in-laws bought their own farm on the Helford River in Cornwall, and then their first restaurant in Borough Market in 2005. Now they own branches in Soho, Spitalfields, South Kensington and Battersea where glittering plates of pearl white oysters are chucked back every day. Their specials menu offers a selection of winners, but we recommend trying their octopus carpaccio from the everyday menu.

Bonnie Gull

The first Gull outpost has offered a slice of the seaside to Fitzrovia since 2012 and their second seafood shack in Soho has the same simple but creative approach to excellent quality produce. With just 23 covers and no bookings you're best bet is sitting at the bar with a plate of Porthilly oysters, but don't leave without trying the squid toast, or the crab and sourdough for that matter.

Randall & Aubin

For over 20 years this unpretentious Anglo-French Brasserie has served seafood to Soho under their iconic disco ball. Their extensive menu includes spaghetti packed with juicy pink prawns, a signature crab burger and starters ideal for sharing - or guzzling alone - like moules marinières, scallops, crab cakes and calamari.
