Logan Porter added the latest installment in his storybook Kansas City Royals career. The former Royals clubbie hit his first career home run against the Houston Astros in Saturday’s 10-8 victory.

And he did it against a childhood friend.

Porter faced Astros reliever Joel Kuhnel in the eighth inning. The duo played together on the same club baseball team in Arizona.

In high school, they played against each other. Porter went to Valley Vista High School and Kuhnel attended Sunrise Mountain High School, both in Arizona. The familiarity came into play at Kauffman Stadium.

“I faced him earlier this year when he was with the (Cincinnati) Reds,” Porter said of a minor-league meeting between the two. “I kind of knew what to expect. He threw me a good pitch and I put a good swing on it.”

Indeed, Porter drove an 85 mph slider over the left-field wall. The blast traveled 400 feet and gave the Royals an additional insurance run.

As he rounded the bases, Porter relished the special moment. He waved to his wife and parents in the stands as he celebrated at home plate.

“I made sure to give her some love,” Porter said. “It was awesome.”

Porter became the fourth Royals player to hit their first career home run this season. He joined teammates Freddy Fermin (May 4), Maikel Garcia (June 4) and Dairon Blanco (Aug. 23) on the list.

This season, Porter is hitting .429 in seven career at-bats. He has three hits and a 1.357 OPS (on-base plus slugging).

“It was awesome,” Porter said. “It was something I will remember forever and I’m happy my family was here to be a part of it.”

Additionally, Porter was also called in for catching duties. He replaced Royals captain Salvador Perez, who was evaluated for a concussion.

Perez left the game after being struck with a foul tip. The Royals announced that he is dealing with a non-concussive head impact injury.

Porter stepped in and guided the Royals pitching staff to victory. He was ready in the dugout and produced when his number was called.

“The home one is great, obviously, it’s his first one,” Royals outfielder Kyle Isbel said. “I’m super happy for him. The way he caught behind the plate was even better I thought. Just plugging in, right in the game, is really tough. He did an incredible job.”

The Royals won the weekend series against the Astros on Saturday, which also marked their fourth consecutive win overall.
